There is no one best language. To ask such a question reveals your level of ignorance. But ignorance can be cured by a good dose of knowledge.

I consider C, C++ and Java "Good" languages because they express algorithms elegantly and concisely.

I consider Pascal and Basic "Bad" languages for the reason that they were meant to be learning tools, never serious languages. Pascal compilers needed parts written in C - Pascal isn't powerfull enough to write a compiler with! Basic is even worse.

I consider COBOL a "Terrible" language for the reason that it has very lengthy syntax. You type until you have no fingers left, and still your program is only half-finished.

That said, you must keep in mind that each problem has an ideal language in which it can be solved. AI is better solved with LISP than it is with C for instance. That does not make LISP "better" than C, it only makes LISP "better" than C for that domain of problems.

    See?

    That sounds gay.

Of course asking a question reveals ignorance. It's impossible for
someone to ask a question without "revealing their level of
ignorance." Duh, that's the point of questions.

Why can't people answer a question without getting all technical
    about it?

    Q: "What time is it?"

A: It does not matter what I say, because the information I give you
will be outdated as soon as it reaches your ears. Asking such a
question just reveals your ignorance on this matter. I am smart. I
program computers. You are intellectually inferior to me.

You know, I'm sure there is a "best" language out there, generally
speaking. He didn't ask what the best language for AI was, or
what the best language to program games in was. Yeah, there
are languages available that do one thing better than another,
but when you ask in general terms, I'm sure there has to be one
    that's the best.

I think it's time this board actually determines the best (again,
generally speaking) language and turn it into a FAQ question.
There should be a list of questions that help determine what this
almighty language is, and a scorecard that keeps track of how
many points each language received from that question. The
language with the highest score wins, and from this day on will
be known as the best language; and if anybody ever asks this
question again, every Cprog member has an ethical dutie to
reply with the results of this competition.

    Questions can be centered around:

    Portability.
    API Support.
    Difficulty.
    Acceptance in Industry.

I don't know anything about any language, so I won't even attempt
    to answer anything.

So I sound gay. So what?

And I don't think the point of a question is to reveal someone's level of ignorance. Usually the point of a question is to gain knowledge.

Girlzone should thank me for my grandmotherly love. Like valar_king said:

My point is that the question is based on wrong assumptions. A Japanese would answer this question: "Mu" which means that, basically, your question is wrong.

The fact that you don't know anything about any language is revealed in your attitude. But the FAQ idea is cool. You planted the tree, now you must water it. Please post us a comprehensive answer to this prickly question.

Here's a link that might help.

    Forget About It.....

    - sometimes people ask questions to know and to judge the way people think...

    - and sometimes in your life you prefer certain things without any clear reasons for this * i thought that people have the same thing in programming *…

    - if you people don't like the question, you don't need to answer it…

    - you don't know maybe someone will benefit from it….

But ethic never said the point to a question is to reveal someone's level of ignorance in the first place. He said that asking a question will reveal someone's level of ignorance(really we should say- lack of knowledge, not ignorance).

Anyways, no one should ever be discouraged from asking a question. As the old saying goes- there is no such thing as a stupid question... And most people consider intelligence to be measured in the ability to ask a good question- at least it means you have understanding of what's going on. Everyone has different levels of knowledge pertaining to different subjects. Just because a question may seem obvious to some, doesn't mean that everyone knows the answer.

We don't have the same thing in programming, I DID answer the question, and if you wanted to know how we think, pray tell... why did you not ask ?!?

To find out how we think study the following:

    The Tao of Programming
The Hackers Dictionary (Get from Project Gutenberg)
    The Hacker Howto

    Hope that helps.

Didn't discourage anyone from asking the question... I answered the question AND showed what the correct question would be.

That old saying is nonsense. Of course there are stupid questions. Stupid questions are the easy ones to ask. Clever questions are those that you take a spot of time to research before you ask.

Asking for favorite language on a C/C++ board... Stupid question - Everyone here likes C/C++ of course.

My entire post I was defending my manner of answering the question to ethic.

As for the comment about revealing ignorance, that was not meant as an insult, it just sounded good when I typed it. In retrospect I have to agree with ethic. It does sound gay.

Watch it flyboy. One of these days you goin' down!

Just agreed with that part... not the rest. The point of a question is STILL not to reveal ignorance...

But I'll leave it at that. Rematch for another time and place.
