In my opinion the electricity generator, as a single invention, has had more effect than anything else upon the way we live. No generator means no electricity. No computers, no lighting, running water, manufacturing machines, hospital machines, no nothing practically. Look around you and you will be hard pushed to find something that does not require electricity to function or did not require electical power in it's manufacture.

You seem to bang on about the internet but the internet is not much more than a specialisation of the tremendous work carried out by a Scotsman in inventing the telephone.

You mentioned GPS just now, a technology based upon satellites which the Russians were the first to develop.

I don't see that nuclear technology has had a profound effect on the lives of everyday citizens, other than striking fear into their hearts during The Cold War. Going to the moon is another example of a tremendous achievement for science that has had limited effect on the lives of ordinary people. Especially when compared against things such as the invention of the Jet Engine, Internal Combustion Engine, Plastics or the invention of Penicillin to give a few examples.

What I am getting at is the fact that much of the great things we see today are underpinned by equally great or better work carried out some time ago and just because they are newer, in no way makes them superior.

Most of humanities achievements are American.
Most houses are made of pie.
The population of the Earth is approximately 187.
mart_man00 is the smartest guy around.
Bill Gates is most famous for his collection of soft drink cans.

See anyone can make utterly ABSURD statements, it really isn't hard.

Most of humanities achievements are American? That has to be the stupidest thing you've said yet, no no, wait a minute you're the guy that said:

if it cant be equal the people that are actually decendants of the people that founded the us should have a better deal
    and
every single person in france and geremany is evil
So given your record this latest absurdity is not out of character.

So the ancient Greeks didn't have any "great achievements"? Maths and philosophy don't ring a bell then?

Our grasp of the universe around us, does that count as a great achievement? Newton, Einstein, Maxwell, Heisenberg, Schrodinger, Galileo, Socrates, Plato, Pasteur, Flemming, Darwin, Dirac, Faraday, (and many more) no great achievements there?

Does the genius of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, and the other great classical composers not count as "great achievements"?

Ever heard of art? Obviously all great art originates in the US.... uh or not.

Technology, science and many of our social advances are gradual processes, humanity climbs towards the sky on the back of previous generations. Just because the highest brick of our technology skyscraper might have come from the US does not alter the fact that it is being supported by a billion more, each one layed down by people of the past.

Your blitherings mart_moron are what gives America, and Americans a bad name.

"Although, for the record, America is a technological leader"

Oh don't get me wrong i agree completely that the US is a large part of the driving force behind technological and scientific advancement in the world today. More so in fact than any other individual country (although i wouldn't necessarily say more so than every other country combined). And correspondingly that the US has had alot of input in many of the technological and scientific achievements of the 20th century.

I merely object to him claiming that "Most of humanities achievements are American".

We may be a technological leader when it comes to our citizens and actually owning technology, however, I'd say Japan is miles in front of us is many ways. No, their technology doesn't come down to the masses as much as ours does, but the things they do are amazing.

Heh, that just goes to show how time and motivation can change things. No more than 50 years ago a VERY large amount of Japanese products were inferior, a cheap alternative that was build cheaply too, kind of like korean and vietnamese products of today, yet not they are one of the leaders of technology.

Anyway, what does American creations have to do with what we gained/lost in Iraq? Isn't that the point of this thread, instead of "bash America just like we always do."?

americans invented democracy? are you stupid? its a greek word... demos meaning 'people' and kratos, meaning "rule." oh and guess what democracy was invented by the greeks and a long time before america came about

as for canada well guess what we didnt invent anything... well ok just a couple things no one needs...

    telephone
    insulin
    canada arm
    basketball(ok this one is trivial)
    ship propeller
    washing machine
    Undersea Telegraph Cable
    Hydrofoil Boats
    Twin Plane
    Electron Microscope
    JAVA (god help us )

etc... yeah i guess we do nothing

By the way, can any Canadian talk a little about how the country was founded? Every body knows American us vs. Britain, what did the Canadians do? I’m just wondering since you never hear about this kind of stuff.
people like this guy make all the americans look ignorant... do they teach anything other than how great america is in your schools?

and yeah we pretty much did nothing other than repel your attacks and burn down your whitehouse not to mention having to deal with a huge conflict between the french and the british

"people like this guy make all the americans look ignorant..." why, because we don't know every fact about every country in the world?

I will admit though, I honestly don't know much about Canada's democratic history. Really, much more than the fact it's our neighbor to the north We were taught what the provinces are, and the capital's of each, but that's about the extent of it. A large chunk of history we learn is our own history... why shouldn't it be? It's more important to learn about the place you live first, have that be the main focus, then give a little info about other countries throughout the world. Or at least that's the way it was a my (rather underachieving) school.

heh, and yes, saying Canada invented basketball is quite trivial. Even saying America inveted it is trivial. After all, the Maya civilization invented it

lol, from one person's idiotic statement to another. Zahid, there is a difference between power and danger. We are powerfull, yes, but dangerous? That's very controversial and depends on how you view danger. We aren't going to rape your women and gas your people. We will not kill you for speaking out. We will not attack with no reason, even if that reasoning is weak. We have laws that govern us, and we have a fair society. If that is dangerous, then please show me your ideal of "perfection".

That's really a good list. That's what USA have done and still doing.

No doubt that if we vote on "USA is the most dangerous country in the world right now." among 6 billion people around the world, YES will get landslide victory. Do we have any doubt?

    >>We have laws that govern us, and we have a fair society.

Yes but these laws do not extend to non US citizens in US custody or are applied to the US corporate activities outside the US (even if the products are sold in the US).

The current US administration has no qualms about arbitrarily, indefinitely and inhumanely imprisoning children as young as 13. It has been doing this in violation of the Geneva Convention for nearly two years.

    >>We will not attack with no reason, even if that reasoning is weak.

The US administration stood up in the UN and said it KNEW Iraq had WMD. The US refused to wait for a UN meeting or accept the decision if it went against the attack of Iraq.
    Where are these WMD then?
Why where these WMD such a threat to the world but not even used in the 'Battle for Iraq'?

    >>We will not kill you for speaking out.

Some Nigerians, Angolans and Liberians would disagree. Especially if it involves a US corporation.
The US withdrew its ambassadors from Nigeria when the Commonwealth kicked Nigeria out for hanging anti Oil Corp protestors (Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People).
The US has however not stopped the corporations from exporting oil or developing the area the protestors were trying to protect.
More Nigerian oil (about 2 mill barrels per day) goes to the US than anywhere else.

Why no ‘regime change’ in Nigeria? Because the profits go to US oil companies.

    Please come and get them.

about the democracy part, look at how many countries do it now. the others that do it (atleast most that i know of) have some influence from us. the point is if we didnt make it we made it good. yes, alot of countries have made alot of advancements. no one country should take all of the credit, but if you must start the us/west bashing, gets who made a hell of alot more and who could conquor whos ass.

nice try with that one quote. the one where i said its not like all XXXX people are evil and only quoting the all XXXX people are evil.

europeans, with my apologies for the good guys over there, shut the $$$$ up. for the americans, give it up.

the thread is now pointless. just bull $$$$. if more gets posted its probally just a rant and if a mod is happening to read this you going to close soons anyways why not do it now.

this is a great example of why there is no debate and why nobody cares anymore. no progress is ever made.
