Wrong. The early Mortal Kombat games were beyond great. I'll
agree that they received a lot of attention because of the blood,
but that's not what made them good.

It was a combination of the secrets and the story.

Mortal Kombat II was by far the best in the series. It came out when
I was in 6th grade. I would have my mom drop me off at the local
baseball card shop every saturday with $5. I'd buy a pack of
Beavis and Butthead cards, and get the change in quarters --
which I would spend entirely on Mortal Kombat II.

Ooh, then Mortal Kombat III came out. I kicked ass, baby. Crowds
would gather around me at the Amusement Park's arcade and
watch a little (well big, I was fat) 7th grader virtually beat the
hell out of prepi 20-year olds trying to impress their girlfriends.
That park had the best MK setup I've ever seen. The monitor was
like 50 inches, and it was backed away from the controls about 10
    feet.

I finished MK3 at a theater on one credit... I used Cyrax the entire
game. I remember, because it was the same day I went to go
    see "Angus."

I spent countless hours memorizing all the secrets to all the
games. I still remember a lot of them -- 10 years later.

Ooh, and the home-releases. I got the Genesis version of the first
MK because it did have blood (ABACABB. Heh, still remember the
code). I ended up liking the SNES version better, though.

I bought the SNES versions of MK2 and MK3. The PSX versions of
MK3, MK Trilogy, and MK4. And the GCN version of Deadly Alliance.

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance was fun. The fighting engine was
clever, but they completely ignored what made MK great -- the
secrets (and "The Krypt" doesn't count. That's not a secret, just
a rip-off of Soul Calibur's Mission Mode). Each character only had
1 fatality and there were no pit-fatalities. Not to mention, a lot of
the characters were dumb (and ugly)..

MK 2 was the greatest. <-period

ethic, I did the same thing with Tekken (standing around beating the crap out of arrogant preps impressing their girlfriends).
I once went to the movie theater arcade and played this one kid with like 4 of his buddies crowded around him. He was spouting some bs about his fighting style. Basically what happened was he was WAY too overconfident and got his ass handed to him when he got Paul, but he switched to Eddy when he was about to lose and it was all over for me. I hate Eddy/Christie.

I hold the Tekken 4 time attack record at the local arcade. 3:20 with Yoshimitsu. And have to never lose a single match to have your name there. I have 1st place and 2nd place.

I've been getting into Virtua Fighter 4 lately.

His Tekken 3 or Tekken 4 form?

I think it was Tekken Tag that would go "CHICKEN!!" really loud when people would chicken on it.

No, Mortal Kombat ruled the world. Then Midway released
    MK4, and MK's days ended. MK4 couldn't compete with Tekken 3.

The best fighter in the past 5 years has been Soul Calibur. Soul
Calibur II will be coming out soon (and the Gamecube version will
be the best for this reason alone: Link), and that will then rule
    the world.

I think Virtua Fighter deserves a lot of credit, too.

I liked playing MKDA, but it should have been so much more. For me,
MK has always been about the secrets. There's just no excuse for
it being as lacking as it was. They had years to develop a sequel
to MK4. In fact, MK5 was announced several times before Midway
even decided to leave the Arcade market. At one point, Boon said
he was considering using an advanced chip from 3DFX for the
graphics. The game was originally suppose to hit arcades in 2000,
yet it wasn't released until the end of 2002.

MK6 is suppose to include online play, so that's something. But
for me to be extremely happy about the next MK game, this is
    what I want:

At least 2 fatalities per character.
    Babalities and Friendships (definitely Friendships).
    Pit Fatalities.
    Secrets.

    Everybody at MK5.org sucks.

But I'm so excited for Soul Calibur II. I'm thinking of digging my
Dreamcast out of the closet and playing Soul Calibur... Hmm..
    Really thinking about it..

Very true as well. These "abilities" in the game made it so much more fun and popular.

    But you forgot animalities.

    another point well made.

I think Brutalities would be really rad with the new fighting
engine. A huge, 200-hit combo that changes fighting-styles in the
middle... Jeez, that just sounds too cool..

The MK5.org weenies banned me from their forum. Me! Can you
believe that? I couldn't, either. I'm great. How come I'm the only
    person that sees that?
