I have written an application in C# which looks and feel eactly like the latest MSN Messenger.. I have created this to play some prank on my close friends.. When they use my program to login to the messenger the password is mailed to me.. And after some time it shows them an error saying that "the Messenging Server is down".. I wanted to know wheather this was OK legaly.. My frieds are very close and they will not bother about me getin their passwords...

If you're gonna do it, just don't release it to the public or anything...

first of all, if they dont care, then why not just ask for thier password?...anyway, i dont know, im sure there's some "fraud on the internet" law against it, but if youre really that close to your friend, and he/she wouldnt care....then why not

I don't know if it is illegal, however I can imagine it is illegal to get such information like passwords from other people without their permission. Probably the lawyers won't try to get you, if it were illegal, if your friends don't ask them. But if they spread your program, even without wanting to hurt you and just show other people what you made ..... I don't know, be careful with it. If it is spread on the internet, it is not only the laws of India which are applicable, but probably also international and other national laws concerning protection of privacy.
it is illegal. hotmail has the right to charge anyone who creates these password getting softwares because it's a violation of the privecy thing. they don;t give a $$$$ even if it;s ment for a prank!!
You could add some extra protection to your program like disabling it after a certain period of time. That way you run very little risk of getting your program distributed.

so to make one of these things, even though it might have nothing to do w/hotmail,(lets say like yahoo or anything else) they can charge you for it?

I have changed my program where when the user logins it does not ecord or send but displays a message saying what happened which displays the mesage along with his user name and password.. Will this be OK..
Seems there is some sort of problem with legality. But be sure that it's unethical to play with others information without permission, even if it is not the password.
