Thread: Future aspirations

Im curious of what people here want to be when they grow up [if they haven't already ] I know this is an overdone cliche and that there are probably numerous threads before this one of the same topic but still...

I myself am interested in programming only as a hobby thing. More into science, particularly physics so my realistic goal would probably be something like... on a design team of Lockheed Martin or Boeing? hehe... Not sure if im good enough though.

i wanna get into game programming, im hoping to get an internship this summer, and get my asc from digipen next spring and hopefully get a permanent job

did u know that most phsyics/chemistry grads end up teaching -- most likely at a high school.

I personally only have one goal, to get stinkin filthy rich, I use my programming talents to pay the bills but as soon as I get enough I will become an investor and make some bills and retire. I went golfing with some dude who owns his own toy making company. He works like 3 days a week and has time to golf or do whatever everyday - every friday he golfs all day and then has a BBQ at his mansion - Now that's the kinda job I want.

But then teachins not bad. [high school, not primary school] If you dont care about the money.
Its enough to live off, uno the average stuff, buy a home etc. But the holidays are swell!

And no I disagree about the phys/chem grads ending up as teachers, usually they combo up with another subjet like engineering and become civil engineers or something. I plan to specialise in physics... maybe even get a doctorate.. if im not incompetent After that, being a lecturer ain't bad at all. But then again... thats really hard.

Personally, I have no plans. I'm just going to see what happens.
Maybe one day I'll be able to make money from one of my
hobbies, if not -- that's rad.

Maybe I'll just bounce around from job to job (assuming these
wiener-employers don't ask stupid interview questions and
actually hire me), state to state, country to country looking for my
place.

I just want to enjoy life (doesn't mean I will. I'll probably cower
out like everybody else and adapt to the 'norm'). I don't care
about making money. I don't want to be old and experienceless.
To me, no matter what occupation you have, it's still a form of
prison. As I said in my other thread, most people spend their
entire lives in the same 10-mile radius. The world is huge --
everybody should see all of it. Not limit yourselves to maybe 2
weeks of vacation per year. I know this is an irresponsible
attitude to have towards life, but I don't care.

I actually admire hippie/slackers (when I'm not hating them). They
may not have as much money as some yuppie working on Wall
Street, but I'm sure they have more experiences (good and bad).
And when you're 95 years old and about to die, that $1 million
dollars you spent your life trying to accumulate won't mean
anything. You'll die knowing that you spent your entire life
working for meaningless paper.

I don't believe there's any more to life than what meets the
eye. I don't believe that anything happens after you die. As
far as what I believe goes, after-death is exactly like pre-life.
This life is your only chance to... well, do anything. Why would
you want to spend it doing the exact same thing every day? Spend
half your day working, just so you can live the other half (assuming
you're awake 16 hours/day) ? Chances are that other, non-working
half would be spent at home in front of the television. That's
crazy man..

No way to see all of it, I've tried, at best you only ever get to scratch the surface of a place you're visiting.

The essence of what you said there though is true, travel changes your attitudes. When you see first hand the deprivation, differences and how cheap life is in some places, you can't help but be changed.

(By "cheap life is" I don't mean cost of living, I mean "so someone died what the heck").

I'm planning to take a gap year next year ill be leaving somewhere around the first of july and after that year ill start studying. And indeed i agree that if u got the opportunity try to travel as much as you can. I know you cant see the whole planet in a lifetime but if i could see most of it ill think i know that when i die my conscious will be fine.
And with seeing the whole planet i just dont mean a 24h stop in some fancy hotel, visite some musea and leave next morning.
I mean see the actual culture ppl are living in and watch normal life. Because i dont think ill be doing the same thing as someone who lives in india in the morning (im talking bout cultural differences not racial ones)

When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a policeman. Then, I wanted to be an archaeologist. After that, a pro baseball player. For awhile, I wanted to be an engineer, so I went to school for engineering. After about 6 months of that, I wanted to be a history teacher, but I stuck with engineering. Now, I'm an engineering student with a programming job who's looking at law schools. I want to review video games for a magazine.

im exactly the opposite of govtcheese. i cant really come up with something that sounds so good i would want to do it ever day for years. writing reviews for video games does sound fun or perhaps helping write strategy books. what i do know is im not going to be a farmer like my dad. he worked that out of me long ago.

... I think I'd like farming. I worked on a farm for the summer when I was about 14, don't think I've ever had a better working holiday.

I haven't got a clue as to what I want to do, but it will odds are involve massive use of computers. Maybe I should get more serius about learning programming. But that gets tough because often I don't know what use I would have for some feature of the language until I find out too late that I need it. Some times teaching your self sucks.
