    A Neat Idea

I haven't seen any games that have protagonists that weild high-tech swords that can download new data and become stronger. Do you think this would be a good idea?

Sure, why not - make it with 802.11, though - ethernet would be sooooo lame.

Musashi absorbed scrolls and such with Lumina, and assimilated monster's abilities with Fusion. He never downloaded special data for his sword.

The idea itself is... vaguely concievable from a scientific viewpoint. However it has been done before to a small extent
Anyone remember Deus Ex? Where you go to Hong Kong and become recruited into a Triad and you have to recover the Dragon Tooth sword... ROM encodings etc? (Well actually the sword wasnt 'enhanced' but its similar to what you're getting at)
    Nuff said.

Hm, seems farfetched, not that realistic even for 50 years in
    the future.
