should I get a job as a programmer, or join the air force?

I'm starting the second half of my corporate training, and even though I don't have a degree, by the time I'm done with this co-op, I think I'll be pretty well prepared for an entry level position.

But, I would like to get a degree, and the only way for me to do it at this point would be to join the air force.

Even though I'm not thrilled about investing the next four years of my life there, I've heard from friends that they've had the time of their life.

Plus I'm tired of working out in the real world, and want to do something else with my life.

What do you think I should do? Right now I'm leaning about 75% towards the air force.

I know I might be able to get my employer to pay for the degree, but I'm thinking that would be a hassle, and I'd probably like to devote my free time to gaining more knowledge as a programmer rather than a degree and studying what I already know(if I was in that position).

But I'm not sure, any advice would be great.

    Hrm...

I'm thinking of calling the Air Force...

I don't think we should have someone who would base life decisions on the opinions of the weird people you find across the internet flying jet planes.

Seriously though you are really the only person who can make that decision.

You should not join the airforce thinking that
you will get a free degree. You have to be prepared
to kill and invest a huge amount of your time to the
goverment. You also have to be prepared to
have significant decisions about your life made for you by
    a stranger.

Exactly, I think you should take it more seriously...
You have to think enough, and make sure to make the descision yourself...

    Exclamation

I wouldn't make the decision based on what people tell me on a message board.

    I'm only looking for advice.

Anyways, I'm pretty sure I'm going into the air force.

Less chance of coming home with your "goodies" in a doggy bag if your a programmer.

Don't you have to give back one year of service for every year of study? Could be bad if you don't like the armed forces.

No, the air force trains you while you server, if you server for four years, thats your degree.

Ah - that is better than in Australia - for every year of service you have to give one back. That is about the only reason I did not join the Airforce. Oh yeah.. that and lazyness.

If you enlist in the Air Force, get this strait: You will not be a pilot.
From what I've seen (living on an Air Force Base) only the officers can be Pilots, CoPilots, Electronics Warfare, Navigators, and Radar Navigators.

If you go into the Air Force you probobly won't be risking your life at all.

I'm not concerned that i'll be risking my life, its just they control our lives so much as it is, being under their constant eye doens't strike me well.

It doesn't sound like you want to be a piolet though. I think enlisting is a fine idea. You'll get the education you want, plus you'll have the GI Bill if you want to go further later. You'll serve your country, and the chances are that you won't be risking your life, espcially in the Air Force.

Plus, employers like hiring people from the military. You'll get an ok sallery, and you're going to be given room and board for four years. I think it's worth it if that's what you want to do, and if you want to get that degree.

(I'm also a big fan of the degree, we are always hearing about how hard it's gettin gto find tech sector jobs, the more educated you are the easier it is.)

I can't do it, so if you decide to, you have my thanks.
