Eh, why? It's a programming forum.
I don't see how smilies would add anything to... well, anything.
I could see if this was some gaming/leisure forum... but with the GD people seem to forget what this website is about.
I think that smilies can express many things... even in a programming forum, it's makes the post more alive...

You need smilies just in case your words dont convey the meaning you want, so you put theas being sarcastic etc. And when you are being evil, you use the devil face at FD, or all the other cool ones there.
