i know when i was in the Army in the 70's the Air Force guys had a much better life. they had better living conditions, better facilities, better assignments.
if you can get in (GPA, Criminal record, Health) the Air Force would be the way to go.

I would think so, a little, but wouldn't they go more with how you had proved yourself while actually in service? Eh, maybe someone who's actually been in the military could reply...

Oh yeah, just thought, my mate recently came out of the Navy here in England (served on a minesweeper incidently). He said it sucked, that's why he left. He reckoned he was little more than a glorified cleaner, just cleaned the ship all day long. He said it got a little better cos he managed to worm his way into the communications sector and learnt all about radio comms, but it still wasn't enough to outweigh the incessant cleaning, so he quit.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm already a functional programmer and know computers well, and I'm not even half way through my current corporate training courses for c++ programming.
I might not have much to show on school files, but I'm sure I could at least impress a few with my computer skills.
I'm a pretty determined individual, but I'd like to travel through the sea, so I'm still leaning towards the navy.

Currently I am persuing a Royal Navy (UK) commission. If I get it, the nice folks at the Ministry of Defence will give me a £1,000-£4,000 bursary every year while I'm doing Computer Science at university (Covering my tuition fees and (most) of my other debt...) and then I have to serve I think 4 years after I graduate.
When you owe the Government as much money as I will, I think the only way I could survive in work without them taking about 20% of my salary away would be to let their defence budget handle it outright. Okay, I might get killed, I can deal with that. The fact is, as an officer I wouldn't be cleaning the ship all day, oh no...
I did consider the RAF for a little while, but I simply thought that you either become a pilot or you sit around in a base all day shining nose cones. I'm not a frequent flyer, so I didn't want to limit my choices so distinctly. The Royal Navy lets you choose up to three disciplines you'd be interested in. I chose Engineer first, then Flight Crew, and finally Warfare (Command). I'm not 100% keen on flying, but I think I might like it if I was given the chance.
I'd definitely be into engineering though.
The Army did hold a small amount of interest with me, and I did go on a Territorial (Part-timers) training weekend, but it seemed too much like hard work for me. You're miles from anywhere half the time and if anyone gets injured, even if you've got a medic there's not a lot they can do for them...
The Royal Marines is DEFINITELY not for me. You have to be an 'ard Middle Counties b*stard to get anywhere in there...
I'll admit I come from a military family (All of cousins and uncles have been in the Army, and my father), but I didn't really consider this option based on history. Fact is, I don't want to be paying off my student loan forever. And who knows, maybe I'll like the Service.

Yeah I've got a buddy in the Royal Marines. And he is 'hard as nails'. But he's also thick as a bit of 2x4, so I guess the two go well together. He loves it though so fair play to him.
Ok, my dad's a B52 pilot fo the Air Force. Here's the facts:
1. If you enlist, you don't go throught "boot camp", you go through basic training. Boot camp's for marines.
2. You must serve 5 years minimum.
3. To be a pilot in the Air Force, you generally must be an officer. You must either get a ROTC scholorship or the Air Force Academy (you have to get a SENATOR to get you in here).
4. The Air Force is better.
The only branch you'll really die in is the Marines. People seem to think joining the Army means you'll be fighting people. Only ONE B52 has crashed in the last 20 years, and that was a pilot's error, not some SAM.

Ewww, the US military's weird. It'd be quite funny trying to persuade my local MP to put me down for a military academy, seeing as I didn't vote him/her in because I was too young, so there's no incentive for him/her to do it. 1. The Military Academies are only for the BEST. They spend about $100,000 between all the training you get there. In addition, you get an "income" for going to an academy. What you do is you send in a letter to be nominated to enter. Once you're nominated you must write a letter to a senator telling him/her why you think you're good enough. Only one person per senator I believe. The Senators have no idea whether you voted for them or not.Originally posted by SMurf

2. That's what tankers are for. You refuel in the air. You fly the airplane at the right spot and a "pipe" comes out of the tanker. It connects to your plane and you refuel. If you turn too much, the pipe automatically breaks off. My Dad had to show students the limits of the pipe without breaking it off, in the middle of a turn to the right.
