i own a gamecube and enjoy it very much. i have not had any problems with it at all so far after 1 year of use. it has several strong games and is not necessarily a kidde console. it cant play dvds though like a ps2 can. and ps2 has more games out to choose from. the wireless controllers are supposed to work well for the gamecube too.

I have two major complaints with console -> PC ports. One is that it always takes months for the PC version to come out. I mean - Halo's not out for PC yet, and they're already talking sequel for the XBox? Also, they almost always do the ports wrong. If they're going to take all that time, add something to the damn games! GTA3 came out for PC, what, like 6 months or more after the PS2 version? Y'know what's new? A crappy instant replay feature and the ability to play your MP3s on the radio. Lame... Multiplayer would be bad ass in that game.

I must recommend going with ps2 but that just comes from its support of my favorites genres/series (rpgs, Armored Core series, RAD, most other mecha games, kengo)

I was just talking about the 2 things that bother me most about games that were originally out for a console, but then get reprogrammed and re-released for PC.

That's true, heard it's a 40gb drive. But you can buy memory units that plug into the controller and save to them instead, presumably so you can take a saved game to a different Xbox console and play it. It only saves .dat files (at least on Oddworld, all I've played), so not much storage is taken up. The HD is divided into 50,000 +"blocks", whatever that means, and the average game save is 25-30 blocks.
Maybe playing online or using it as a dvd player takes more blocks, but otherwise can't see where you'd run out of space.

a memory chip thingy???? its called a memory card for god sakes!

when i has a god ol $600 (canadian) on my hands, i had the choice between the 3 systems. and i chose PS2, and heres why:

PS2, simplke to use controller, and the use of those stciks side by side are just best for those games that need them. Has extremely good games like:
    Medal of Honor: Frontline
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (CVX is for PS2, CV is for GC)
Resident Evil Online (being worked on, but this RE is going on the PS2 instead of the GC)
    Devil May Cry
Devil May Cry 2 (out for a january release in US)
    Metal gear Solid 2
    Contra: Shattered soldier
    Gran Turismo 3
    Grand Theft Auto 3
    Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
    Ratchet and Clank
    ...

the list goes on with all the great games out there! but there are a few rushed games, and could have been converted better. like Silent Scope. but the PS2 also supports DVDs right away and you can play music on it, and also supports PS1 games, so there are literally a thousand games out there the PS2 can play. Online adapter out already. so have fun!
Actor Van Diesle, has decided to make games for the PS2 as well.
PS2 game developers (cant remember which ones) are making an FPS that kicks halos ASS!
can stand up on its vertical side, how cool is that???
2003 is releasing colored PS2s, get a red one, or black is fine, black and red looks awsome!
you dont need a remote to play DVDs
some option include smooth texure shading, improved sound, and many other options!

X-Box: made by the dreaded microsoft. so its already lost quite a few players. its true, it only has a couple good games, and the ONLY one that comes into my mind, is halo. it needs a $50 (canadian) hardware attachment to play DVDs as well as a remote. has built in harddrive and comes with online support. uhh...the controller is confusing to the beginning player. did i mention that halo is one of its only good games? very large anbd heavy. but looks cool. comes with its own hard-drive.

game-Cube: basically made for family entertainment. but it has its gory moments. the controller is both decorative and confusing, and the hell is the Z trigger up top and harder to press than any button ive ever pressed in the world??? that puzzles me. Capcom recaently said theyd be doig RE for GC now, so thats a bonus for you nintendo fans out there. but Capcom just recently came back to PS2. Doesn;t have online support, cant play DVDs or normal music CDs for that matter. uses a special un-copyable disk thats azbout half the size of a normal CD. uh...compact in size....thats a bonus?

X-Box may have more graphical power, but who really cares? graphics make 1/4 of the game. the gameplay takes 2/4 of the game, the replay value takes 1/4 of the game. thats basically it right there. X-Box developers spend so much time on their graphics, they just slap together a game when they get excited about a new good looking character model. thats why Halo was such a releife. because it got all of those down pat.

My Top Recommendation for each system:
PS2: Devil May Cry 2 (January Release), or Silent Hill 3 (<--- looks very good)
X-Box: Halo or Time Splitters 2
GameCube: Mario Sunshine or Resident Evil Zero.

WAY off. 8Gb typically, 10Gb in a few, though only 8 can be used (2 wasted). It may not be 40, but 8 is more than enough

*cough* *cough* I know you already got your system, so my reply is pointless, but anyway:

Yeah, you're right there. A lot of people (like you) don't even consider it a good system JUST because it's made by MS.

its true, it only has a couple good games, and the ONLY one that comes into my mind, is halo.
LOL!!! This is the biggest piece of crap, and a very typical flame towards the X-Box. Seriously, go into a GOOD store and look around. Most stores just don't sell many X-Box games. But if you go to a good one that sells all the games, you'll see just how many good games there are. A lot of which are on all 3 systems, or at least X-Box and PS2 such as Hitman 2. As for X-Box exclusives... there really isn't even a lot of competition there. Seriously, the true X-Box exclusives, ones that use the X-Box to it's fullest extent will kick almost all of the current PS2 exclusives asses. I may have only had my X-Box since christmas, but how about this? Halo (duh), Oddworld: Munch's Oddysey, Metal Gear Solid: Substanance, Splinter Cell, Project Gotham Racing... and the list goes on.

it needs a $50 (canadian) hardware attachment to play DVDs as well as a remote.
Yeah, that is kinda annoying. No doubt there. The PS2 can play DVD's with the standard controler (as annoying as it is) so why can't the X-Box? Oh well, I already have a DVD player so it's not like I care about that.

has built in harddrive and comes with online support.
Weeeeeeeeee, finally you post something good about it! If you want these features in your PS2 you're going to be paying WAY more than the $50 it would cost to get the DVD attachment for the X-Box

uhh...the controller is confusing to the beginning player.
Ermmm, may I point out that really the only BIG difference between the X-Box controller and that PS2 is that the D-Pad and left analog stick are switched? That's actually a plus. Most games today use the left analog stick as the main movement instead of the D-Pad. It simply makes more sense to have the main stick in the main part of the controler. That's the biggest reason I use the D-Pad on the PS2, the left stick is just in the wrong place. How about the fact the PS2 has 4 triggers? That's a pain in the ass to me. Yes, the X-Box does have those little black and white buttons that are actually in different places on different controllers, but that's the only confusing thing, just those damn little buttons . Why couldn't they be like buttons C and Z and be in a logical position?

did i mention that halo is one of its only good games?
Yep, and I already covered that

    very large anbd heavy.
Very true, but it is lighter than my computer

but looks cool. comes with its own hard-drive. It could look better.... if you can only see the front of it like on mine, it's kinda boring. Only the top looks nifty. I actually prefer the look of both the GC and PS2 over the box.
    And i'm done...

    >Resident Evil: Code Veronica X (CVX is for PS2, CV is for GC)

Bleh, go with the Gamecube if you want Resident Evil games.
I just finished the remake of RE1 last night. Fantastic (the
ending was still sucky) game. Plus, Resident Evil 4 is coming
    to GCN soon, too.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica was never for GCN. It came out
for Dreamcast first, then it came to PS2.

Which should be a reason not to get a PS2. He's a dork.

    >an FPS that kicks halos ASS!

And Nintendo has already created one. It's called Metroid Prime.

    >can stand up on its vertical side, how cool is that???

Not as cool as having its own handle... You know, like the GCN.

    >2003 is releasing colored PS2s, get a red one, or black is fine,
    >black and red looks awsome!

    Which Nintendo has already done.

And I'm guessing you haven't heard of Phantasy Star Online?

    >X-Box: Halo or Time Splitters 2

Time Splitters 2 is available on GCN also!

I never saw the facination with any of the oddworld series. Had one on my psx, and didnt find it all that fun to play.
MGS Substance is on PS2 as well. Splinter cell doesnt really compete with MGS2 im afraid (EDIT: Splinter Cell is coming to PS2 now, anyway, just to let you know.)and Project Gotham Racing is missing a bit of shine, and cant really match the experience of Gran Turismo 3.

    >X-Box: Halo or Time Splitters 2
Time Splitters 2 is available on GCN also!
It was also on PS2. And the original game was a PS2 exclusive

Xbox is missing some well known names on its system, and im sure the Microsoft name isnt helping it at all. I get sick of the buggy OS. I dont want them invading my console.

Also, as a general thing, i dont like the idea of hard drives and online capabilities. As good as it can be to download updates to games and stuff (as you do on PC), i dont want to be constantly fixing up bugs in my games, and worrying about downloading fixes all the time (as you constantly have to do on PC). I dunno what it is, but there is a balance on console gaming, in that generally they are less bug prone (probably due to standard machines, and not worrying about hardware setup). But to me, its all that much enjoyable to play straight out of the box, and not go and download files. And i dont want them getting the impression they can release games earlier, and rely on patches to fill in any gaps they missed because they didn't care so much.

    My suggestion

I'd go with the PS2, if for no other reason than Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City. I'd be happy as a clam if I had just a PS2, GTA:3 & VC, GT3, and Tekken Tag Tournament. Those are all spectacular games that one could just pick up one day for a bit of enjoyment now and then or one could devote much time to fully unlocking all of the secrets of the game. Either way, tons of fun. Also, the PS2 is backwards compatible with PlayStation games and it plays CDs and DVDs. My choice is definitely the PS2.
