    state of the industry

    howdy,
as some of you know i own a contracting company in New Mexico.
Business is pretty slow and we are coming out of a rather soft year in the engineering/construction industry. we are starting to see a litle more activity but still not like 2000 was.

my question to you industry insiders is:
how is the programming industry at this point. does it look to be picking up or are you pro's looking for another slow year or do you anticipate a boom this year??

    M.R.
I don't like you very much. Please post a lot less.

    *and then*
No, I know you were joking. My point still stands.

Terrible. It's so bad in my area that I feel lucky I've not been laid off yet.

Me too. Lots of people around me haven't been so lucky though.

I'm a lucky one, I have plenty of work at present.

Those comments dont make me feel happy. I have a co-op position this summer, I hope it picks up a bit, so I can get that experience.

I second that, i have a paid internship with my job (gateway) where i'll soon be working in the programming department of our store instead of where i am now, in networking.

It'll be database programming and such, but its good experience i think.

No work here. There are posts available if you will re-locate - for the most, to Bangalore.

I'm fortunate right now to be in a fairly stable position myself but I know my company isn't raking in the money now.

I don't believe it will ever get like it was a few years ago. The reason is most of what you saw a few years ago was because of fad/buzz of the stock market reaction to any and every startup internet company to come along. Now, there has been a backlash and people will be far more skeptical of a software company before investing now. That's just the way I see the future. Many weaker programmers will just become managers of retail stores (it's happenned already) and the job market will stabilize. But don't count on the glory days ever coming back. Just not going to happen.
