    Gm

    Genetically Modified....
When people hear these words they panic. Why is it...?
Don’t you think to feed the world growing population better crops are needed that can produce more food. Don’t you think it is a big leap for mankind...?

I saw an episode in National Geographic’s... where they interviewed many people in Africa... I saw that many activists from the Developed Nation were protesting against the distribution of GM food grains...

But these food grains were saving the lives of thousands of people....

Why is it that many people protest when subjects such as DNA, Genetics etc are involved...? Is it ignorance or is it super understanding...

I don't think it's either, it's more about their beliefs. They believe that Genetic Mutation alters nature, in short, it's unnatural. And in a religious point of view, that is a big no-no.(I said this 'coz I believe most of the people who protests always have a religious root)

I don't think most of the people who protest do this because of a religion people, but a lot of them do. In my opinion most people protest because they don't understand what it is. I recently saw a program where several activists explained why they protested against genetic manipulation. Some of their reasons:

They are afraid GM will have unexpected and maybe even dangerous effects to living on earth. They were afraid that creatures would be created which could be dangerous to other life, like bacteries we would not be able to stop killing, or something like that. They also were afraid that eating GM food would have dangerous effects to us. What they said most was "There hasn't been done enough research to this.".

So I think besides religion, also the fear of the unknown plays a big role in this.

PPL who offer only protesest and no SOLUTIONS are idiots. I don't know why anyone would listen to these morons.

Let all these governments who are heeding the protests of these pieces of garbage STOP and do what is necessary for their ppl like FEEDING them in africa.

I wanna take a baseball bat to all these communist, vegetarian, anarchists, protesters who feel that their rights to FLAP their jaws are more important than the suffering their misguided beliefs IMPOSE on others, cuasing all the suffering to continue.

There reasons are mostly valid, not that I'm a protester
    or anything.

They are afraid GM will have unexpected and maybe even dangerous effects to living on earth.
Consequences on the earth is undetermined just
    like most decisions.

They were afraid that creatures would be created which could be dangerous to other life, like bacteries we would not be able to stop killing, or something like that.
Take a GM form of peas that is modified. It could spread
away from the farm and compete with other plants. Already
you see the effects of certain types of fish grown
    outside of their natural habbitat.

They also were afraid that eating GM food would have dangerous effects to us.
No long term study has been done. It could cause certain
types of cancer for example. You might say the chances
are slim maybe 1/10^6 but then there will be a million people
eatting it so it would be catastrophic.

People who put a lot of energy in thinking of new arguments against something can be very usefull to get new points of views and insights in complex problems like these. To get this knowledge you have to ask people who protest why they are protesting.

They certainly are not morons, they are just people with a different opinion. And they do have a solution: stop GM. That is their solution to the problem.

    >>stop GM. That is their solution to the problem.

That is not a solotion. GM allows us to produce high quality food faster, more plentifully, using less acreage. What are these IDIOTS telling the ppl of SUDAN to do with their crops without buying GM seeds. I'll tell you what these IDIOTS are telling them, they are saying TRY ORGANIC FARMING - no pesticides, no industrial chemicals, natural seeds, use large amounts of acreage to grow your produce. This is a path to continued suffering as only a small percentage of the produce will survive to market, ineffecient use of land, and since agriculture is the base of most market economies - continued poverty.

F these FREAKS, kick em in the face when see one. Thier solutions are not solutions, they are beleifs that will harm and destroy entire populations.

GM isn't going to solve world hunger. World hunger
is caused by war, abusive goverments, and total disregard
of other countries. We have the surplus
of food, it's the organization/politcal issues that kill.
I don't see any real reason for using GM, the addition of
fertilizer and arrigation of crops is all that's needed.

genetically modifying things doesn't seem all that far off from what mankind has been doing for millenia anyway. I mean think about all of the things we (humans) have created for ourselves. I can't think straight right now but take light bulbs for example. There isn't anything that says we must have lighbulbs but we use thngs from the universe that are just laid out in front of us for instance electricity. There is nothing that says we should take advantage of it but we just go ahead and understand how it works and manipulate it for our own usage anyway. same with nuclear bombs, cars, monitors food lots of things. if you understand what i'm saying genetically manipulating things doesn't seem all that bad. im dumb we should be the crap out of me

Take the hunger situation in Sudan. That was caused
by drought and civil war. GM food would not have made any
difference. Also since most of those countries are dependant
on agriculture, producing a surplus of food would devalue
the produce. I'm not going to rush and say that GM food
should be banned, it's just unfair to say that those opposing it
    are going to cause starvation.

That is your opinion, they have a different opinion. I also don't think only calling them idiots because they don't understand your point of view is very usefull. Now they are protesting against you and you are protesting against them, that won't help the people in Africa and other parts of the world with hunger problems very much.

I agree with Nick, GM is not the solution to the hunger problem in this world. Hunger is for example caused by wars, wars are in a lot of cases caused by people wanting more money, more power etc. GM will not prevent wars. In my opinion, GM is okay but must be controlled heavily. I also think that a lot of food we eat in the western countries is already genetically manipulated.
