    No more personal insults please.... if you want to have a bun fight, do it in private
    When all else fails, read the instructions.
    If you're posting code, use code tags: [code] /* insert code here */ [/code]

    It's been unreal today. I have been sat here for the past 6 hours or so doing an assignment whilst occasionally browsing the Board and there has been so much slagging off.

    Earlier we had all that business with those idiots mouthing off at govt and now a flame war brewing with Cgawd and various others.

    Lets all just get along.

    HOLY **** GUYS!
    what source code!
    i have ran an:

    EZboard
    IkonBoard
    PHPBB

    and they dont give the source. they let ou download it, put the files on the ftp (most likely from a zip) and you chmod it to whatever they need it (different boards need different CHMODs). then you go to the installation file, install it with the nessesary info (like mySQL info and stuff, administrator username and password) and click "install", the php, cgi, perl, whatever its programmed in, will install the board. ikonboard needs alot of info while the phpbb was a shart little form and only that one form and was quite easy.

    they dont GIVE you the source. they give you the nessesary files in order to install it.

    as for editing the smilies, its all about tuning on your favorite PHp editor, Perl editor, or even just a simeple Text ditor, and downloading the file and editing a few lines of code. could be more, but thats all there is too it,.

    do you know how EASY it is to change the color scheme and change the copyright notice, change the style and CSS of the boards and call it your own creation? EXTREMELY EASY!

    as for that one guy who jerks off......well........i cant say much about him, but i hope he gets chafed! LOL!

    *edit* adding on to what im babbling on about:

    all a board really does is a for loop in the language i is made in. for ever : ) theres a . it replaced the text with an image HTMl tag.

    thats all. when it see text in between (IMG) and (/IMG) (i did the wrong brackets on purpose) then it takes the url and places the html img tag there.

    cascading style sheets (CSS) are what make the text tyles of the board. liek
    <style>
    A:hover
    {
    text-decoration: uppcase;
    text-color: red;
    }
    </style>
    that will make the link switch to UpperCase (all caps) and turn red. thats all the CSS does.

    if you want to get to the smily, you hafta dive into a whole PILE of perl, php, whatever code its made in to get to that specific little area.

    its alot of work for just 1 person. especially spotting the problem.

    you may even hafta ad a few lines of code in there and **** the whole board up. so what woiuld you rather have?

    or he can just disable the smilies all together. all you rweally need is to go to the admin control panel and click em all and click delete. or he can do that on FTP, then whever you see a youll see a little blank box .

    the point is, people are talking about them giving you the source code...say WHAT!?! they don do that. its all a config file and images and installation nessasery files is ALL they give. RARELY does a company like Vbulletin board makers, ikonboard, whatever EVER release their source code. then people could change about 2 lines and call it heir own creation.

    It's not about copying the text into another editor. It's when viewing it. I see no point in having smileys wreck up your code.
    Of course if there is no easy way of solving it, then let it be.

    You could disable all smileys in your post, that is possible and I usually do it, but if you want to use smileys outside the code tags, then that's impossible.

    it is extremely easy to for the webmaster (or any admin for that matter) to add more smilies to the board. it is extremely easy. its as easy as downloading/making smilies, uploading them to the appropriate folder for the board and go to the smilit control panel in the admin CP and add them in. seems like alot more work than it actually is.

    The PHP file's given are the source files... It is not some dam exe or something where the source is different from the exe. PHP is a scripting language(ASP, PHP, pearl etc etc..) here you have the script(that is the source code.) you put it on the server supporting it and you run it... The server interprets these scripts(or source code). generates a HTML page and serves it to the user.. SO there is no secracy of Vbulletin source code...
