Thread: advice on starting band?

I'm very into rock and roll (if you can't tell by my sig). I've been wanting to start a band, but i don't have the resources...i'd like to join one with people who are looking for a singer. Now I want to make a demo cd of myself to send out to pep's (or rock record labels who are helping put bands together). Now here's what i ask, i have software in which i can edit the voice (98%) out of music, essentially creating kareoke tunes. My first thought is to dub myself over that so that they can hear me with a real sound, not just alone. But i'm afraid that might shy some away, seeing me as a poser or something. What do you think?

PS: I'm going to make kareoke recordings of myself anyway so anyone who likes rock I can post mp3's on my site (they're legal since it's me singing). And if you like rock believe me you'll like these, im' pretty good *shameless self plug*

but what if they were really good? that's what i'm wrestling with, i'm getting a guitar for christmas and with my sound blaster and can tweak the sound to make an acutal heavy metal sound, plus i can add the drums and bass no prob (synthesized) then i could make demos with my songs...but at that point why not go solo? See, if i sent demos of MY songs, then i'm worried about them getting stolen, etc. Wtf should i do?
Maybe i'll make a "kareoke" of me singing, when it's done i'll pm whoever replies to this and they can hear it, then tell me if it's good enough to send out.

Editing out the voice of a recorded track and putting your own over it could well be illegal breach of copyright - I wouldn't try something that ........es off the very industry you are trying to break into. Check this.

In Europe, there are many music magazines which run classified columns. In most there are ads from existing bands looking for an "x" (insert musical skill here), or a few aspiring hopefuls looking to start up. There must be mags like that in the US.

Look for any opportunity to sing in public - if you're good, news spreads, it is amazing where labels R 'n R people will travel too if they get rumour of an emerging talent.

If you ever get filthy rich and famous, remember where this good advice came from and pay my fee!

i'm making a recording sometime wihtin the next couple of days, im atwork right now so i can't do it (yeah, i know it's sunday).

that's the problem, there are only like 300 kids in my high school, that's about the population of kids in town. And maybe 100 of them like rock (it's pretty sad when i know everyone by name). But in the nearby town of rockford there's always a lot of talent coming out, my trouble is getting myself exposed. I'm thinking of going to some of the bars they perform at sometime on their kareoke nights and doing my thing. Hopefully someone will be there that is interested.

I've actually done vocals on the side for my friends band...but they haven't done any gigs or sent out any tapes (and i don't think they will either)

if a band is looking for a singer, go to them, and audition with them, i'm sure they'll be willing

basically the way to get known is to gig around wherever and whenever you can. sending out tapes wont do much, unless some exec @$$hole sees it and wants to manufacture you
