    I'm not green, I havn't even germinated

the short of it : I'm 35, changing carreers and looking forward to a life of learning in the IT field. I am however in the most preliminary stages and determined not to be shaken off this pursuit. I don't know what " C " is or if this is the best place to start learning what I should know. I'm somewhat frusterated with my inability to find a starting point for my learning. I am looking for advice on how to get started. I am going to be taking classes at my local college; however, I have a lot of time before that begins and would like to walk into class with some basic understanding and concepts in place (if not great understanding.) If anyone feels they have any good advice, lay it on me. I will be checking back and can provide further information and detail if needed.

Well, this is a great place to start. If you want to learn C++ to start, instead of C, or even some basic C, then I would start with:

If you're new to the boards, welcome and reading this will help you get started.

You may want to pick up some starter books like "C++ for dummies" (no insult intended), or check some of the reviews/titles found in the "Books on C and C++" thread on this page.

edit:// Also there are some very simple C++ program examples on my website under the "tutorials and code" section. You can find my site in my signature below this post.

some more really great places you might want to add to your favorites are howstuffworks and Ask Dr. Math for any questions and mathmatical formulas. Also I found this site which helps me remember any conversions convert-it .
I hope this helps and good luck to you. Congrats on changing jobs I have not changed jobs because of my pay but I lust for learning something new. Good luck, these people in here who have been around a while are really professional and will try they're best to help you.

Which part of this are you interested in?
"IT" ranges over writing VB macros for MS office, designing web pages or writing operating systems (and a bunch of other stuff).

C (and C++) is only applicable to some of these tasks.

So can you narrow down what IT area you want to get into?
I'm trying to learn how to do this message board. I am going into database administration bassically because I had to select something as a major to enroll at my local college. I'm not sure that DA is what I ultimately want to do though. I am just needing a very basic place to start off.
