Hi, can anybody please give me an idea of what type of programs the clients of freelance programmers typically request? Thanks.

Software which is extremely difficult to implement, and/or are in violation of the laws of physics.
I looking for an answer like "database programs" or something like that...

OK. I'll try to be more constructive. I have been a freelance programmer in the past, and I am currently one now.
From my experience, it's usually custom Windows software.
A few years ago worked on the following:
1. Windows front end for a microwave moisture measurement.
2. Windows front end for a datalogger device.
3. Windows weather display software for the UK Met. Office.
Currently, I'm working in Paris for start-up company. They want to develop a Windows multimedia application.
Being a freelance programmer isn't all fun and games. Employers don't care about technical practicalities, and if they decide that their business plans are on thin ice, you might not get paid.
There are jobs for knowing the vendor tools, like Java, .net, Oracle, etc. I think that Java is the best of these options. On the other hand, there is work for system administrators. You have to know how to use enterprise servers. I don't know if this is the same for freelance work, but apparently this is what is requested of college students who are graduating. These are skills for getting a job, not inventing jobs, or not specialty work.
usually some windows database program or orginazition tool. thats what ive seen a lot of. the best thing about freelance is that you typically get paid more but unless you have a line of clients freelance is no good. acorse unless you do freelance as a free time job
well i had some bitter experience with freelancing.. I was doing a site(HTML, and ASP).. for a yoga freek from the US(Miami).. He had a site which needed more modules.. he agreed to pay me Rs 500 / hour (10$/hr) too big here.. After around 30 hours of job and finishing his site.. he refused to pay me saying that the background color was not right and just left.. but i see that he is using my pages even now...
