Thread: IT certifications - how good are they?

I was browsing through the net and came across this I.T certification stuff - - -

A+ Certification, RHCE, Microsoft Ceritification, Cisco Certification, Novel Certification, Network+ Certification and CIW Certification.

Question, how are good are they, and how, they are able to help me, when i finish my studies. how relevant are they to in real life working environment?

anyone here have certification of any type?

how tough r they? what do you learn ?

I'm A+ certified.

Looks good on a resume, helps for basic stuff, is pointless in real life. I've been an onsite tech for the past 2 years, haven't fallen back on anything I learned for A+.

Get as many certs as you can though. The more, the better. When it comes to business, it puts you that one step ahead of the rest.

so basically a cert, is just a DOOR to your career ??

Yeah, more or less.

They do certify that you have knowledge. Employers like experianced people, and a cert shows experiance in one way or another. A cert may even put you ahead of the "truly" experienced people, depending on the employer. Some companies will only hire people with certain certs, means less time training for them.

They are a door to your career. Anybody and everybody can get them, so there's no point sitting back and letting everybody else get your job.

Just keep in mind, there isn't much out there for a programmer. That's one reason I only have the one certification. But, if hardware, networking, support, etc... is your career path investing the time and $$$ to get certified is probably a wise decision.

am i assuming that the IT industry is pretty dead at the moment?

i always thought programmers get paid alot . . ?

By that, I mean certification wise.

To the best of my knowledge, and I certainly could be wrong, but I don't think there are very many, if any, programming certifications.

As fare as I know the only cert for programers are mcsp (microsoft certified solution provider) I started to do that one but got bored with the DB stuff. Got a MCSE + internet that isn't worth crap for what I want to do. Some companies might like to see it on the reume though. Of all the certs I think that the cisco certs have most prestige.

Oh what about the MSCE (microsoft certified system engineer)? It's one of THE certs to get. However the status of this MSCE has fallen back a little, since there is so much info everywhere about this cert that it has eased the whole cert. test.
