...but I do want to be remembered for stating this case, because it sure is not going to change in the near future. I think that C is an implementation langauge for building systems, and that will remain tha way for probably decades (although more C++)! C/C++ I relate with each other as practically the same language (but not quite)!

I invested almost 3 years here and this is my conclusion. I learned plenty about the language definitions here, but there is nothing else of value if I want to continue with C/C++. The only thing that I can do is face a mountous task, and that is using C for implementation of systems.

to a point i agree with TK here, you can go so far then it stops,
a solution is no longer really clear.

once you have the language down, what next? where from here? even how to begin?, knowing the language isn't really enough, it takes you so far then you hit a brick wall, and it's a tough climb over.

I think we kind of need to adress these questions( at least in a different way than we have), maybe not to give a complete answer, since the answers come with experience, but a little help, perhaps a push in the right direction?

then again... how do we do this?

i've noticed there's a great lack of help in this area, anywhere.

There are lots of good ideas floating around in this discussion.

Dean has been pointing out a lot of good things that we all would like.

But before I go into those, go back to the original idea of the boards. A good educational source for beginner programmers trying to learn. That is how the boards we have now should stay.

However, I am all for some method of satisfying that non-beginners also who would like to talk more about algorithms and more advanced methods of programming.

I saw Dean's last outline of the how the board should be:

    Language Definitions:
    ---------------------
    C Programming
    C++ Programming
    Other Languages

    System Interfaces:
    ------------------
    Graphic Device Interfaces (GDI)
    Divice Driver Interfaces (DDI)
    Application Programming Interfaces (API)

    System Implimentatons:
    ----------------------
    Artificial Intelligence (Algorithms)
    Transaction Processing Systems
    Distributed Systems
    Operating Systems
    Sponsored Systems (Framworks/etc)
Although those boards have nice topics I would like to discuss about, I just dont think that would be a good way to design the boards. If the boards were designed that way, we would end up like Flashdaddee (no offense to Flashdaddee)...and I dont mean Flashdaddee is bad, they just have too many boards. Look at the thread counts on those boards. Some range as low as like 10 threads on the entire board...While the main flow of threads is on one or two boards. I doubt 75% of the board visitors bother to visit more than 2 or 3 of each of those boards.

If we designed the boards the way which is layed out above by Dean, half of those boards would have severely low thread counts. That would look bad. It would be as if there was no activity on the boards. People would not want to post on those boards because they would be afraid no one would answer them because all the activity is on one or two boards elsewhere.

If we want to talk about more advanced things and algorithms, I suggest we just make 1 board called the General Algorithms Board (which has already been discussed earlier in this thread).

But that in itself is not enough. Even if we did that, who is to say it would get used? We have to promote ideas of conversation and discussion before the board will be used.

To do that articles are needed. I know we have tried this before, but I suggest we try it again. We need Cboardians to write short articles on different programming and mathematical concepts and algorithms.

These articles dont have to be a "teaching" type of article either. Maybe they could present two sides of a problem and then ask the readers to discuss it and figure out a solution to the problem.

Articles would not only help to spark discussion, but they would also help to attract more advanced programmers here.

We have a serious lack of advanced programmers. We probably have at most 5 or 6 advanced programmers. Most of us are intermediate programmers. And they we have a ton of newbie programmers (those are the ones who stay on the C/C++ boards). By the time they get to the GD board, most have reached intermediate level.

But maybe these articles would cause an advanced programmer who was just dropping by to see what the site was like to come into our forums and join in on discussion.

The articles would also be good learning experiences for us all.

So anyways, that is my whole opinion on this matter.

    I'm watching and considering.

In response to the comment about the site needing a redesign: I agree. The current structure isn't sufficiently extensible. There are a few new updates planned, and they will push the limits of the current navigation system.

not to second guess nor to overstep my bounds, i just would like to state my qualms as for any planned redisigns/updates, i ask for simplicity and modesty, the current site is beautiful in it's simplicity(and modesty), yet slightly outdated, thats why i am usually reluctant to support updates, fear of losing this simplicity.

    simple is beautiful,
    modesty is even more so.

::edit:: apon further thought i realize my statement may seem as if im telling you your job or that i am being upity, but i assue you this is not my intent, i leave it to your judgement what is appropriate.

It is becomming difficult to take the ignorance between Standard C/C++ programming and Microsoft interface programming as the center of the universe and answer to everything.

I hate it!!! And I hate all those that endorse it. If you can somehow keep me away from those members than I will be very happy. I'll even send money.

If I could ask for one thing than it would be generic programming boards, that do not cater to any one vendor. When I go to the universities and colleges I witness a generic treatment of computer science subjects. When I come here, I just see Microsoft everywhere. This is very disturbing and sick. I don't know for how long I can fight these turkeys!

I ,yself am a neqbie with my dumb quedtions ad you put it. and I thinj that a newbir sitr would be a gooood idea. I visit the sitw often. mosst of thr time it is just to read new threada and seee what i undersstanf and what i can learn. but I would like a newbie site because I sometimes feel intimidated asking my simple questions amongst all your advanced questions. I would also like to be able to share my ideas with people of a similar level to myself. Somewhere we could work through are problems instead of just being told the answer. Don't get me wrong but sometimes although the answer solves my problem I don't always understand exactly how it works just that it does work. A newbie site would allow us beginners and students to work through these problems with intefering with you guys and if you happen to look at it every once in a while you could always steer people right if you can see they are missing the point or heading in the wrong direction.
