The link in my signature is for information about the academic version. You can download the .NET framework. As far as the release date, they just say "by the end of 2001". Since WinXP is going to be released at the end of October, I think it's Oct 25, it would seem logical that VS.NET will be released very shortly afterward.
Okay, the beta is available if you have an MSDN subscription. You can probably also purchase it at microsoft.com but I've heard that the beta 2 will be available in several September issue magazine subscriptions.
It might also be a good idea to read about the .NET framework because .NET is complex but very powerful.

You don't need a MSDN subscription and you don't need to download anything. You can either get it off a magazine or order a cd/dvd from microsoft here.
Finally, i have in my possession a VS.NET Beta 2 DVD! Picked up MSDN Magazine September Issue for $5 USD

I got the DVD out of the VS dev magazine, but don't have the white papers or examples - is there anywhere else to get them online, short of asking MS to send them to me?

not as far i know - but the cd is free to the states and the uk, it is free and postage is freee also.

They didn't have all that extra stuff when I ordered mine a few weeks ago(and I had to pay postage). Maybe I'll order another copy.

When I ordered mine I got an email saying it would be dispatched within 21 days (or something like that) but 2/3 days later it arrived.
If I oder the Beta, do I have to use it now. Or can I wait a year or so so I don't have to wory about paying $200 million for it.
