    Trying to be cool

I was thinking that it would be nice to be a cool geek (as opposed to just a geek).

So I figured the road to coolness lay in programming. No problem, I went to school and learned to program. And then I headed out to the web and rub elbows w/all the other cool geeks.

Then I found out I wasn't cool- I had learned VB and I was a loser geek, not a cool geek.

So I learned some C++- and headed back out.

Problem was I was using windows and cool geeks don't use windows. The truly cool scoff MS and use Linux.

No problem. I went out and got linux.

    Operation coolness a success, right?

Well I got Corel Linux and apparently this is the only distro that is not cool. It is the loser linux.

    Sometimes you just can't win.

You didn't know Corel was the loser-Linux!?!? Aww, geez! How could anyone make that mistake!?

Wouldn't a really cool geek write his own OS?

Combine stuff from Linux with the marginally idiot-proof Windows, maybe? Use Batmobile-esque characteristics of BeOS?

Linux is a pain in the ass, go back to MS Windows. The next generation operating systems are comming out and they will be much more stable than Win9X.

Okay, this is the way Microsoft sees it. They went to extra work in designing WinXP to make it easier for developers to do their job and to make languages like C# easier to use develop in than C++. If you go the Linux route get ready to build everything yourself including building cable wires out of a block of coal.

Nope- I didn't know about Corel.

I was standing there in Fry's electronics trying to decide between Red Hat and Corel. Well Corel came with an inflatable Penguin in the box. What can I say?

W.K.- Well beyond wanting to be cool. I want to get into the defense industry. Specifically working for Lockheed Martin. They use Unix for the OS on a lot of the custom hardware they build.

I can't afford Unix but Linux I can use and learn the way of the *nix.

    Dean...

what makes you think winXP is gonna be any better than all the other heaps of crap that come from microsoft.

OK I admit I use microsoft operating systems exclusively but that is only because that tends to be where the most work is.

I would love to work on an operating system but as yet do not have the relevent experience to be able to put all my thoughts into mission-critical code.

From what I have read winXP could well be better than both 2000 and 95/98/etc. but then as I have said before ....

Have Microsoft ever got anything right first time?
Will winXP be released before it is truly useable..... probably all their other OS's were.
Free the weed!! Class B to class C is not good enough!!
And the FAQ is here :- http://faq.cprogramming.com/cgi-bin/smartfaq.cgi

I was told that WinXP is a great new OS from MS. All the people I know that have been beta testing love the OS and can't for it to be released. Me, I'll just have to wait and see

I picked up a couple books on .NET and am gathering information. All I will say for now is that a lot of functionality has been added to WinXP. It is an operating system that will pave the way to a large number of changes that will be introduced in programs escpecially in the area of internet security and control. It is the developer who will benefit the most. I have a lot to say about it but right now I'm taking the time to do the research. BTW I have taken a course in LINUX. I do know a little bit about that OS.

    Amen to that!

Hmm, that's funny cuz BeOS has always been more stable than Windows and ALWAYS will be (if Be, Inc. stays in business )

2 things- Palm is buying Be.

and second (forgive me but I must say this)

A kid here just got sent to jail for manslaughter. He was high on pot and got behind the wheel- where he killed someone.

I've seen your posts before. Your drug induced inability to reason will make this impossible for you to understand-- but that is a death caused by marijuana.

As far as marijuana goes, you should never have started smoking it in the first place. Now you are addicted to it, that's why you want it legalized. Just thought I'd let you know.

Let me just say that the development platform you use means nothing - its what you do with it.

I and many people I know personally, smoked pot
on a regular basis for years and never became addicted
to it. I never tried to stop smoking pot, it just occurred
as a natural outgrowth of married life.

I know and have seen people turn on their kids, their
    dogs, their cats, hampsters, parakeets...whatever,
none was worse off for getting stoned.

Contrast this with those who try to stop smoking nicotine or drinking alcohol. And as for you Mr. Witch_King: don't knock it if you've never tried it.

The most hazardous thing you can do under the influence of marijuana is (1) drive and (2) work at a job
    which requires lucidity and concentration.

    pot thread?

I must be missing something here. How did this become a thread on the "evils" of smoking pot?

and second (forgive me but I must say this)
No, you don't have to say anything about someone's personal decision. Why do you feel the need to interfere? Are you really that bored?

A kid here just got sent to jail for manslaughter. He was high on pot and got behind the wheel- where he killed someone.
He got what he deserved. This has nothing to do with smoking pot. He could have been under the influence of freaking cold medicine, and he would have deserved the same.

I've seen your posts before. Your drug induced inability to reason will make this impossible for you to understand-- but that is a death caused by marijuana.
ummm...i don't quite see it that way. I'm not high, and i don't really see it as a death cause by marijuana. It was most certainly caused by a lack of responsibility. What's behind your inability to reason? religion?

Look, I don't mean to attack you personally here, but I feel you did the same to Hillbillie. You guys might have a history of purely irrational hate. I really don't know, but if you're trying to influence another's behavior, your post doesn't seem like a very effective way to do it.

    >2 things- Palm is buying Be.

Really? Is that for sure, cuz there's a lot of rumors going on in the Be community. Most beleive Sony is buying Be. I'd rather Sony buy Be than Palm. Oh, well...

And about the weed comment, where do I start. I'm just glad not everyone in the world is as ignorant as you. And Witch_King or whatever, Dean, whoever you are, marijuana CANNOT cause physical dependence/addiction. Caffiene is more addicting that marijuana....

Now, I apologize for getting off subject, but I felt I needed to make those statements
