baseball... and prof. sports in general

Has anyone seen the MLB All-Star game yesterday? (this is directed mostly to those in USA =)... a tie because all the pitchers were used? The all stars has become so much like the NBA all stars, where the game is not of any importance. The managers are afraid to pitch someone for more then 2 innings, afraid of an injury... it's now a money game, which is what most professional sports has become. I'm just frustrated with all this...

I heard it on the radio, im not much a baseball fan, but I couldnt believe it. Only the second time in history, there was a tie at an all-star game. I know they dont want to injure the players, but if you pitch someone more than an inning everyone may not get in, so they dont really expect a tie to occur.

That was a great catch, I dont recall his name, on Barry Bonds.

They should allow reentrance of pitchers in case of extra innings. As method says, it's not that the pitches don't want to pitch more than 1 or 2 innings, it's that the managers want to get everyone in, and that means pitching for only an inning or so. I think a tie is the worst possible outcome of an allstar game.

Not only that, they make this big deal about naming the MVP after Ted Williams, and then don't even award the damn thing! I'm not a huge baseball fan, but Jesus, man, this is not what you want to happen to any sport.

Yeah Giambi won, Sosa had 12 dingers in the first round, one was more than 500ft. Incredible!

Apparantely 85% of players use enhancements, that is crazy!

It's no mystery that I am a huge baseball fan. You can tell by my signature......and by me posting as "Baseball Is My Second Religion". Anyhow the All Star game was an embarrasement. I a hardcore baseball fan but I am myself very angry at the current stage of Major League Baseball.......I am so angry to the point where I think that all the fans should strike for at least a week. Yes fans not go to the games see how that sits with the Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig. Besides he's made some terrible decisions. He's allowed the Expos to trade players to acquire new players just to raise the value of the team. To just sell the team to the highest bidder next year. They don't really care about winning they just want to make the team valueable to sell it. PS the team is owned by all the owners of Major League Baseball's teams. They should have gone to the mini homerun derby to decide who won the All Star Game. I think that the time has come for Bud Selig to step down, he's flushing Baseball, the game I love down the drain. I think that all the fans should be refunded with their money...........I mean the game was going so good, then that crap..........well I gotta go.......

During the homerun Derby.......Sosa hit about 7 shots that were 500ft plus.....actually one of them was 520ft+

If if you're referring to the fact that 85% of players use steroids.....this is false, this is not possible. I'll tell you why 45% of Major League Players are pitchers......Steroids does something with the muscles or something, well the bottom line is that Steroids kills the pitchers arms. Pitchers are not even allowed to do weights....Also remember that taking steroids will only make you stronger, this is not gonna make you hit a ball....So as you can see the numbers just don't add up.........

I need to take a rest.........any other Baseball questions?

Yes I know it's rather sad.......but I love this game.

That was a great catch, I dont recall his name, on Barry Bonds.
Torii Hunter, the center fielder for the Twins.

And the farthest home run was 524 ft by Sammy, in the HR Derby.

Also remember that taking steroids will only make you stronger, this is not gonna make you hit a ball....
Well, when you are stronger you can hit a ball farther, therefore, a lot of the players who are hitting the ball far (i.e. Sammy, Barry, Gonzo) are likely to be taking steroids. Did you ever see Sammy early on in his career? That was one skinny ******. Even four years ago he wasn't that big, then all of a sudden he got big and hit 60+ homers. Coincidence? Now to Gonzo: While I am a Dbacks fan I still think that Gonzo has or does take steroids. The guy was nothing before he came to the Dbacks. His first year with the Dbacks he was pretty good, but he wasn't that big in terms of size. His next year he hit 30+ homers and many believed that was his best year he will ever have. Then just last year he hits 50+ homers. This year he isn't hitting fantastic numbers, but they are still good. Over two seasons he got enormous compared to his previous stature. Coincidence? Barray Bonds at age 37 hits 73 (or 74?) homers! Plus he sure seemed a lot bigger to me than usual. Coincidence? Basically my point is that a lot of players have to be taking steroids to gain that much size so late in their career. Maybe none of those three players I mentioned took steroids, but it seems unlikely that they didn't considering the circumstances. I guess to me it doesn't seem all that probably that guys that are in their 30s are able to get that much bigger.

Pitchers are not even allowed to do weights....
Oh and about pitchers, yes they do lift weights, but not to say that they do take steroids. You're telling me a guy can get that big of arms without ever lifting? I'm willing to bet anything that pitchers lift weights. Why wouldn't they lift weights?

Yes I know it's rather sad.......but I love this game.
You're right it is sad. Baseball players are the most overpaid athletes out of the Big Four sports. How much does Kevin Brown make? Near 20 million? How much does Kevin Brown play? Near 20 games? Hey ARod may make the most money, but he is in no way the most overpaid player. At least he produces. Most baseball players do not deserve as much money as they get. Look around at how many players in other sports, such as football, are getting paid over 10 million. Everything about professional baseball (MLB) is terrible, in my opinion. Okay I'll stop rambling about baseball now. But it's a good thing I don't love this game, else I'd be really sad about the state that baseball is in right now (and maybe forever will be in?).

Wait wait wait wait a minute.......so you think Roger Maris used steroids when he hit 61 homeruns? The only difference is about 12 homeruns........so as you can see players can hit homeruns even if they don't take steroids......Roger Marris hit 61 homeruns back in the 50s I doubt that he took steroids.....Players now have better physician care, they have better training methods they have better exercise machines....this allows them to get bigger than they used to be before.......I am not saying none of this athletes take steroids, but please take this into account. Most Ballparks now are relatively smaller than those back in the days.

Well I heard from a FORMER pitcher that they weren't allowed to either I think it was do pushups or weights.......

Well if you don't that your problem. I believe things will get better once Bud Selig steps down......he's flushing this game down the drain.

OK, talking baseball... do you guys think that there will be a holdout, or will the players/owners work it out without one?

If there is one (as I think), will it be until the end of the season or a short one (say, could of weeks?)

If there is I think that fans should boycott the game for at least a month and nobody should up to the stadiums.......I think there won't be after this all star embarrasement if they do that Baseball will take a huge blow that will take some years for Baseball to recover from it.

Well, it seems to me that a lot of the players who are now hitting a lot of home runs look at very different than they did before they started to hit home runs like this. Some guys are just great hitters, like Maris, and don't have to have the extraodinary power to hit a ton of homers. But lookig at Sammy now and looking at Sammy four years ago shows that it's very possible he took steroids at one point or another for some time. It's possible he hit the weights incredibly hard, but it's even more likely that he took steroids. The guys that I have in my head who seem like great hitters and that's why they're getting the homers may have taken steroids as well but from appearance it doesn't look like they have. The players I'm thinking of are ARod, Helton, and Griffey (hey he used to be the best). They don't seem exceptionally large, and they also look about the same as they did at the beginning of their careers. All in all, though, it's only speculation but warranted speculation.

Well I heard from a FORMER pitcher that they weren't allowed to either I think it was do pushups or weights.......
Maybe that guy played back in the "day", because it's gotta be impossible to have "natural" arms like some of those guys nowadays. Trevor Hoffman for starters. I know I heard before that some pitchers use those squeezing balls (sorry I don't know what they're called and I don't mean anything perverted either) to strengthen their arms.

Well if you don't that your problem. I believe things will get better once Bud Selig steps down......he's flushing this game down the drain.
It's not only the logistics of baseball that bother me (i.e. the excessive pay, lockouts, etc...), but the games are quite boring too. I've really tried to become a fan of baseball, especially since we (arizona) finally got a franchise (Dbacks). I used to watch a lot of baseball when I was younger (Mariners fan), but I don't watch as much as I used to. In fact I've barely watched any games this year. Maybe once everything gets straightened out in baseball I'll watch more. Then again that's not going to happen until George Steinbrenner gets assasinated. This guy is never going to agree to a collective bargaining agreement, and that's what baseball needs.
