I like both Windows and Linux (and Windows v. Linux threads too). However, for the record, I vote Windows (but *only* post-Win2kPro versions). There is a hell of a lot more software, it's reliable and customisable(as is Linux, for that matter), has a good filing system (NTFS) and I never need to recompile the kernal.

Though it would be nice if companies would write better drivers for 2kPro.

Windows is modular, they are just simply lying in attempt to confuse dumb people. If it were non-modular, it would simply be unmaintainable. That would mean understanding parts of the code in isolation to other parts (modules) would be impossible.

Just because it's not distrubuted in pieces (thou shalt have IE and Outlook when you install WinXP), doesn't mean it can't be.

That said, I think Linux is a more programmer friendly enviroment.

I like linux, and I was really impressed with the most recent version I used (red hat 7.1). It had more standard drivers for my equipment than Win ME did. Linux is getting easier and easier to use, which will help bring it to the masses (even auto drive mounting!), but untill it reaches the compatibilty of Windows, it will remain in the background.

So, with the help of XP (I love this OS), and very good compatibility, I voted for Windows. I also have ME installed (yuck) for the most compatibilty I can get, but linux beats out ME hand down in almost every category.

I started out with MS Windows. I didn't know that there were any choices expect for perhaps Apple at that time. At any rate I find Win2k much more stable than Win9X. Win2k is a good OS for playing around on but I am very dissapointed with the development environments and the fact that it is extremely difficult to use standard C++, so it doesn't meet my purpose for learning that language definition.

I have outgrown Win2k, and having discovered Linux RH 7.3, I'm moving over to work on Linux. The KDE desktop is very nice. I can see some small room for improvement, however my focus is on learning how to program and I want to become further acquainted with gcc as well as the various widget toolkits. Since I don't want to dump out millions of dollars for servers on the Microsoft OS I'm definately going to use Linux. When I am satisfied with the products than I will send them money, but not before. I would like to make a contribution to open source, but the real reason why Linux is much better is realted to enterprise use and academic advancement. It is the best OS to learn how to program, there is no question. In some ways I see no need for Linux to become too popular with home users.

Dean? The GNU compilers are avalible for windows also, and the GNU compilers meet the C++ Spacifications as good as Visual C++ 6. Borland Builder 5 and Visual C++.net meet them the best.

I was personally recommended to use GNU GCC by Bjarne Stroustrup. Well a slight clarification. First he recommended UNIX but than he said use Linux gcc at this time. We also talked about VS.net. He called manged C++.net half baked and said that unmanaged C++.net an improvement however not complete.

He described Win2k Professional as poorly documented. He does not have a copy of WinXP only Win2k Pro.

I'm on Windows. I've been Linux before... I believe that Linux is slightly better than Windows.. In terms of stability, of course.

But I voted for Windows because there's no doubt that Windows will still remain the OS in command for another few years since ppl are very used to it's interface. Switching from Windows to Linux is a pain but once you're used to Linux, you're in total control....

You see.... Computer manufacturers worldwide still include Windows as the OS when distributing PCs...

I think Bjarne Stroustrup is a little bit biased. Just a tad bit, since C, C++ and the Unix OS were created by witch companys? AT&T and AT&T, and AT&T.

Linux as I recal was created because there was no UNIX for the x86 proccesor. It and Unix are closley related.

That's because Microsoft threatens them. They can not sell MS Windows and Linux duel boot systems. It is against the Microsoft licensing agreement. This however will not last forever. Microsoft policy is razor thin. In some ways though I do not want Linux to get tooo popular.

The reason Windows is still distributed with PCs is because most of the people who buy PC are dumb computer illiterate numbskulls, who simply couldnt deal with the complexities of the Linux operating system. Also the drivers distributed with hardware are no good for Linux, no computer manufacturer in there right mind would sit on the internet for hours trying to find a driver which works with that hardware and doesnt screw the system every 5 minutes!

Please send me more of these little WAGE paying gems. Without them we (those of us who do this for a living) would not get paid.

I don't like fixing your PC, but I do like getting paid for it.

I will use whatever OS my customers PAY me to write code for, don't realy care which.

I downloaded Linux Red Hat 7.3. There were 3 iso images, each one should be burnt to a cdr disk but download them to your hard disk first than burn each one. If you are using adaptec software than choose from the file menue, burn as iso image. Than simply insert the first cd and reboot your computer. You will enter the install screen. It is not difficult to install, however the best way to do it is to install it on a separate hard drive. I have a duel boot setup, one drive has Win2k pro and the other Linux, when I reboot, a linux bootloader called GRUB allows me to choose what OS to run. See the Linux board for links to download sites, they are called mirrors. I downloaded mine from a tucows server.
