    Juno EULA

    From the license for Juno:
2.5. You expressly permit and authorize Juno to (i) download to your computer one or more pieces of software (the "Computational Software") designed to perform computations, which may be unrelated to the operation of the Service, on behalf of Juno (or on behalf of such third parties as may be authorized by Juno, subject to the Privacy Statement), (ii) run the Computational Software on your computer to perform and store the results of such computations, and (iii) upload such results to Juno's central computers during a subsequent connection, whether initiated by you in the course of using the Service or by the Computational Software as further described below. In connection with downloading and running the Computational Software, Juno may require you to leave your computer turned on at all times, and may replace the "screen saver" software that runs on your computer while the computer is turned on but you are not using it. The screen saver software installed by Juno, which may display advertisements or other images chosen by Juno, is an integral part of the Computational Software and you agree not to take any action to disable or interfere with the operation of either the screen saver software or any other component of the Computational Software. Juno may set different requirements for different subscribers with respect to the Computational Software (including without limitation whether use of the Computational Software is required and the volume of computations required to be performed) depending on service level or other factors we determine. You agree that, as between you and Juno, you shall be responsible for any costs or expenses resulting from the continuous operation of your computer, including without limitation any associated charges for electricity, and that you shall have sole responsibility for any maintenance or technical issues that might result from such continuous operation. You agree that, as between you and Juno, Juno shall have sole rights to the results of any computations performed by the Computational Software, including without limitation any revenues or intellectual property generated directly or indirectly as a result of such computations, without further compensation to you. If your usage of the Service is infrequent, Juno's ability to obtain the results of completed computations may be impaired. Consequently, you expressly permit and authorize Juno to initiate a telephone connection from your computer to Juno's central computers using a dial-in telephone number you have previously selected for accessing the Service; Juno agrees that it shall exercise such right only to the extent necessary, as determined in Juno's sole discretion, to upload the results of completed computations to Juno in a timely fashion; and you agree that, as between you and Juno, you shall be responsible for any costs and expenses (including without limitation any applicable telephone charges) resulting from the foregoing...
So.... If you use Juno and turn off you computer or unhook it from the Internet, you're in violation of your EULA... Also, they can change your screen saver, and you can't change it. By the way, if you don't use it enough, you might randomly connect to the service... Why do these freakin' things have to be so restrictive (sorry this was so long, I didn't want to be accused of taking it out of context)...

Exactly, and why the hell does Juno want my computer to do computations with anyways?

Are we really that far from reading the new MS license stating you must implant a chip in you head so they can tell where you are at all times?

wow...well all I can say in Juno's defense is that:

    A. not only am i sure that all this is in AOL contract...I bet AOL does it.

    B. I got juno and I never had it do any "computations," cept maybe adding up the costs in ads...

and C. I really don't care what it does as long as the comp don't crash and i keep privacy...I'm only paying $35/year

ummm...I have a defense for Juno.

I think you must have missed a part or something, because I have Juno.

Awhile back ago Juno sent all Juno members and email stating something like this: they were starting some program that would do a bunch of mathematical calculations...i forgot the purpose of it and i dont want to go back through my email to find it...but they were starting this program and were asking for volunteers whom would allow Juno to use their computers to help do calculations. If you volunteered, Juno would download the software to your computer and use it whenever needed. It was not a mandatory thing at all. Therefore you missed something.

oh yeah i remeber that now...They're researching for cure for cancer. they eventually want to you people's PC's (they may already be using non-paying members) in order to calculate things needed for a cure instead of paying for supercomputer time. Just like "Seti at Home" does.

You guys ever do that SETI thing? They spread out their radio telescope recordings to millions of users for computation on different bands. I used to have the program... it would run when my screensaver came on. If your computer finds someting worth mentioning... like ET or a pulsar... you get your name in lights so to speak. After five months of my computer chugging away... I got bored with it and unistalled. Still who knows... someone could find something pretty big.

I dunno David, I just copyed and pasted from slashdot... Sounded legit, anyways...

Even with the cancer thing (which is totally fine), why do they feel the need to change your screensaver and not let you change it back? Also, why don't they just say in the EULA why they're doing it? Sounds like it'd make good publicity....

    Oracle:
( This is not new btw. It has been this explicit for at least 2 years now )

"I will not use the Programs for, and will not allow the Programs to be used for, any purposes prohibited by United States law, including, without limitation, for the development, design, manufacture or production of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons of mass destruction."

Isn't there a part in the Windows EULA that says not to use it to run medical equipment or something like that?

    >why do they feel the need to change your screensaver

Just a wild guess... but maybe the new screensaver is the
program that does the calculations when you don't need your
PC ? Sounds reasonable given the original meaning of
screensaver, which kicks in when you are not using your PC.
Today it's more of a method for watching funny comics, but
given the intention to use your PC in times you don't work
with it, implementing it as a screensaver makes perfect sense
    to me
