Should Unregistered's be allowed to post without registering?

There's two sides to the story. A lot of times, people just need to use the site once, and then never return. If we made all of them register, we'd clutter the site with unused IDs. There's also the people who never register, but just keep replacing
"Unregistered" with their choice in names. We have no way to contact them via PMing or anything. Why shouldn't they register? So what do you guys think?

I think that if they are going to post without registering it should be limited to "unregistered" but I dont' know if this is possible however.

Is there really a problem. If people have to register, then the chance of having a huge list of unused ID's is very big. And if they post regularly without registering, we can't contact them. But maybe they don't want to. I've seen threads where unregistered people registered when they were helped. So I think that the people who really want help, do register. And those who just want a one-time help or want no further contact than just the boards, don't. In my opinion this is no big problem.

And unregistered people can give valuable help, they can post some valuable information on threads. So I don't see why to block posting of unregistered people. I think the popularity of the boards is that it is so easy to access.

I agree with Shiro, if they just need help once, and will never return why should they go through the process of signing up. If they see that the board is helpfull, they will probably sign up, and continue to use the message board.

    Yes!

if you restrict people with something they will react by loosing their interest !!!! (i mean the interest to the site)

Good point uh..... Unregistered, but there's people like (and I didn't want to name names) like *, who regularly post messages, but you can never PM them or anything. So I agree with an earlier idea. If you want to be unregistered, you remain unregistered and only that, But then I think there should be something that automatically registers an IP address with the network. If they use it too frequently in a short amount of time and they still don't register, then something is done. Otherwise I think you're right, the pressure to register will scare peoiple off.

In defence of *, the Mods are aware of who it is, and it would be reasonable to say that this person does not wish to recieve PMs or be contacted. IPs are logged on this board so if unregistered guests cause problems, certain actions can still be taken. If you really need to contact an unregistered guest that has left no method of getting in contact with them, you might first consider that they dont wish to be contacted. If you still desire to do so you, could possibly post to the thread in question regarding the matter.

Most people end up either signing up or leaving anyhow so the system appears to work rather nicely (though I wish one was forced to chose a name besides 'Unregistered').

I think that what they should do is make everyone register before they can post. THey should be able to mingle and look freely but not post. They should then have it so that if the account remains idle for 90 days or something like that, then the account be terminated. IT would make things a lot easier as far as helping people out in my opinion

In defense of my argument: Then what * should do is just not give his email address. He could at least allow PMs.

I think that registered names that are not used for a time period (6 month or so) should get deleted and made available to the public again.

I guess lots of people know who * is....and to tell the truth I dont blame him for not wanting to be PM'ed......If someone wants to post here without being bothered by people, and as long as that person is having a positive effect on this board, then I cant see a problem.

Why all the worry about hassle?

I can't see what all the problems are about!

Registering is only a small thing to do, and if people have a problem, then think of it as the cost of getting the answer to a problem!

IF you have a 60 day or 90 day limit to names then you will be able to clean the database to avoid too much storage costs.

Looking at it from a commercial point of view - if you can count the number of people who actually post - as in number of registered users, it will be easier to prove your popularity to advertisers as and when costs become to difficult to maintain.

Of the 4000+ members, about 1000 have registered and never posted, and another 1000+ have only one or two messages.
These two groups form over 50% of the membership.

So registering to ask a question doesn't seem to be a problem (to me at least), given that such a large number never got round to posting anything anyway. Perhaps they're all lurking....

And when you're registered, you can turn off PM and email in the preferences, and even hide yourself from the user list (which Guests cannot do).

It's very confusing when several "unregistered" posters respond to the same thread.
