    >There are a lot of good reasons to hate the US, like i said they've done bad things, and screwed up a lot of people's lives, that's why my friends have the opinions they do. On the other hand I think that many of them are overly critical of US action, because of the opinions they have already formed, and I also think that they don't see that most of the time the rest of the world is just as bad if not worse.<

Do your friends hate the US citizens or the US government. There's a very, very large difference you know...

Government of course. The only thing held against the US citizens (and it certrainly does not apply to all of them) is their somewhat extreme nationalism.

    I'd say I'm a bit of a nationalist.

I don't know if I'd call myself a patriot. If you define a patriot as someone who loves their country, supports their country, and defends their country, it would be blurry.

    1. I don't LOVE my country. I like living here; that's about it.
    2. I support some things about my country, and others I don't.
    3. Defending my country is not something I'm particularly concerned with. I'm more concerned with defending my family, my friends, and myself (if I can).

A government of the people, for the people and by the people.

Just because half of you don't vote is not an excuse. The world sees no line between them.

As to the debate over freedom, ygfperson, you had better check with the president then, because GWB said

    >>i cant say that i know of any Americans that "hate" any people in general.

You hate who you are told to hate. Kheomeni, Sadam, Norieagar (sp?) and now OBL. But you conviniently forget who created them, who supplied them and then failed to control them.

If it did not happen every five - ten years we would forget and forgive.

nope, i dont. i'm the kind of American that questions nearly everything any "government" does.
personally the word hate has very very negative meanings, at the present i cant thinks of a single person or race of people that i hate. and you can believe this, it takes more than a government press release to convince me to hate anything or any one.

Bull****! If I smoke a fat doobie in my own house, the government of me, for me, and by me will send Mr. DEA knocking. Give me a break...

    >Just because half of you don't vote is not an excuse. The world sees no line between them.<

That's nice, but good thing it doesn't bother me. The rest of world is not one of my concerns.

    >You hate who you are told to hate.<

*looks around* I don't. In fact, I can't think of one person or group of people that I hate.

not even one person ??? not even osama bin nutcase and his merry morons ??? you are truly a saint mr itld.

on the subject of US cock ups, try to be a bit more sensitive/ knowledgable about other cultures.

ie you sent a lady diplomat to talk to Saddam about Kuwait just prior to the war. Ive read different opinions a) to him, to send a woman meant you didn't care especially, didn't take it seriously. b) took it as an insult
but either would encourage him to attack. (or was this deliberate)

and don't just get your lady soldiers to dress moderately in Saudia Arabia, take them out altogether. its bad enough to have foreign troops on sacred islamic soil, to have women troops, you're just rubbing it in.
this is apparently OBL's main gripe, not Israel etc etc.

I am definitely what one would call a nationalist, in that I am devoted to the interests of the US. I love the US, even though I was not born here and English is not my native language. However, I am not a big fan of its government. I think that ever since the Civil War the national government has been far overreaching its constitutional boundaries. Nobody even seems to notice anymore. They forget that any power not expressly given to the federal government is reserved for the States.
I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.

Windows XP consists of 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4 bit microprocessor, written by a 2 bit company, that can't stand 1 bit of competition.

    howdy,
no i cant say i "hate" OBL after all he probably believes more in what he is/was doing than most Americans do.
i can respect a man for fighting for his beliefs, unlike a lot of my fellow Americans that would rather sit around and bad mouth the system that allows them to sit around and bad mouth the sytem.
just to clear the air... OSB attacked th US mainland and no matter what the rest of the world thinks we reacted in the same manner as i believe most free world countries would.

"just to clear the air... OSB attacked th US mainland and no matter what the rest of the world thinks we reacted in the same manner as i believe most free world countries would"

I don't think that it's that simple, OSB did attack the main-land but the only reason that the US attack Afghanistan was because the Taliban refused to hand over Bin Laden, rather than because they deemed Afganistan the attackers.

I do think that the USA's actions were correct given the circumstances and i think that most Western countries would have acted in a similar manner, the only thing I disagree with with regards to Bin Laden and the toppling of the Taliban was the rhetoric coming from the US; The US has a lot to learn about diplomacy, no other country would have called the responce a "crusade" against evil, Bush didn't even know Musharof's (sp?) name in one the interviews!

The worst offender, is how the loss of lives was described: it was always innocent AMERICAN lives, never just innocent lives, when that kind of thing is said the rest of the world hears "American lives are more important than other lives" whether it is the desired message or not.

Whilst i agree that just about every Western country would have reacted in the same manner, I really do believe that most if not all would have handled things in a more diplomatic manner, for certain they would have referred to the loss of "innocent lives", not the loss of innocent French, or innocent British or innocent Germans, etc.

i don't respect him. hes an intolerant, narrow minded, murdering.....oh i could go on.

Hitler had strong beliefs too, i hate him also. i don't think believing in something strongly deserves any respect.

London is our mainland, yet 'shoot to kill' against IRA terrorists was completely condemnded by USA. 'bomb to kill ' bin nutcase terrorists is ok. i can't honestly see any difference. both are valid IMO.

i would add to this Palistine vs Isreal.
i completely agree. Natanyho(sp) stood on the floor of the house and said "you can not call OBL's terrorism bad and call Arifats terrorism good".
i personally don't understand how the American administration can act in such a fickle maner.

    Interesting point.

    One thing I wonder about.
The technology is there if you want to build a nuke. Given the radiactive material you could build one from the stuff in your kitchen, certainly any developed nation could(western nation refered to above).

So why do some nations choose not to build nukes? We could build lots of them with the uranium we have. Why do some nations feel they need them?

And credit where it is due.

Thank you Mr Bush and Mr Putin for reducing your nukes by nearly 2/3rds.

(Why the world needed enough nukes to turn it into rubble ten times over is another matter.)
