    Cool A New Operating System

    Greetings,

Currently I am writing a new operating system, an alternative to Windows and linux. It will be a combination of a Command line based OS and a GUI OS. But I would like to hear ideas from people on what they would like to see in the new OS.

Your ideas on the new OS would be welcomed and if you want to be posted on what's happening just send me an email at [email protected]

Thanks for everything, and we hope to hear from you soon.

hey, thats a pretty big project but i wish you the best of luck.
I suppose the things i would like to see are

Better memory management - forced to free when an application doesnt release it, auto-optomize when it becomes low.

Integrated chip cooling system (maybe something like the HLT command that NT uses)

Better disk management - ie unlike windows - use a *nix type filing system

    Integrated always-on firewall

    Error messages in plain English

    Multiple desktop support

thats all i can think of for now

    >Integrated always-on firewall

i must disagree with iain on this point since a constant fire wall can be undesirable under certain situations make it optional.

That'd be schweet, Rick. I'm for it...

Seriously, tho. You've gotta use BFS for you're main FS; support for Linux fs and FAT should be a goal. Emulation for Windows and Linux programs would be good too.

    SMP support wouldn't hurt.

Stability is one of the most important things for me.

I wish the best of luck to you. When you get somewhere, let us know what's up. I'd love to hear.

Also, what language(s) are you using?

    Post Info on THE OS

    Hey everyone,

We'll start by telling you a litte more about the OS. Well, for starters the name is 'Commander (C)' as you might already know. It is planned to hit the shelves in the next three to four years. Hopefully that will give us enough time to create the world's best OS that has all the features that YOU want.

'Commander (C)' is going to be a command line GUI. In other words it will be like playing any new game like QUAKE or UNREAL. At anytime in using the OS you can call down the console with the key ~ and do anything you want. It will also be installed with a fully compatable debugger for ANY application or game.

It's really meant for the full on programmer BUT there will be options for new users or people who are not that crash hot with computers. EVERYTHING, and I stress EVERYTHING will be optional. If you can turn it on, off you can customize it, remove it. Whatever you want. It will be an OS as individual as you or I.

Although it is really for programmers, every programmer must have a time out and play their games so we're also going for a games OS aswell.

Another thing. It will be extremly stable like Windows NT. The file system is still yet unknown but will probably be custom built with the system, but you can change what file system you want to install onto. The OS is to be extremly well written, therefore using LESS system resources leaving more for what every purposes you need.

Once again all of your help is thanked greatly and please keep sending your ideas.

    Commander.

Answering questions from before it will be written in C/C++ and ASM and we haven't decided yet but we might be writting our own language for it.
