.NET is not a 'fundamental difference', especially since you can install the framework on Win9x. It's just a programming environment.

So why bother upgrading if you have 2000?

Well, you might want the new shell (not to be underestimated); you might want the free firewall; you might later appreciate the increased hardware support. XP promises better compatibility with old 9x-only apps (largely through a list of patches, I suspect), fast user switching, remote desktops and other end-user features. There's no fundamental difference between the two operating systems, but the extra features may well be worth the price.
Plus, if you're a developer, you'll need to be able to test on it, after all.

yah, the only reason I got XP on my moms comp is to test apps. The fact that you can skin it is cool, but I can skin with litestep instead and it is much more customizeable.
overall it is a "dumber" os with lots of stuff like...

my movies
my music
my computer
my settings
the interface to modifying stuff is too user friendly( it takes you through 5 menus to set up simple stuff, to make sure you dont screw it up)
basically, I have final and it has a few glitches, setting up support for printer stuff was hard, and to find the problem would have been easier on Win2k.
It HAS crashed(stalled then forced me to reboot) on me more than Win2k or Linux does. Definitly more stable then any 9x products though.
there are also lots of annoying things, microsoft update always wants to check for updates, msn messenger should NOT be built in.
Also, when switching users it crashes sometimes, so i reverted the machine to a Win2k like login.
its ok, not terrible. I will be sticking with win2k and linux/unix to develop with.

actually not patches just run them in compatability mode and the work fine.
AND ODNT FORGET CLEAR TYPE FONTS THAT ALONE IS A REVOLUTION... except mac's have had it for years that is...

HOWEVER, I too have to develop under a windows platform, and my home use is 98 SE based... and all you people that are whining about stability, maybe it's your own fault. I run 9x platforms all the time and do not have stability problems. Even when I do, it's only because of network problems.. I haven't had a crash on my own machine that I built with 98 SE for weeks.
So once again, I restate the idea that stability is not the issue anymore. Personally, I'm not going to register all my freakin hardware and software with M$... that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard... they're moving toward a yearly fee to use their software... can't you people see that?
Then again, I too cannot completely bash it because it will need to be developed on... so I too will have to learn it.

have you found info. on "beefing" up win2k? so far i've downloaded win2k sp2 and some package with the latest win2k updates (comes with like 6 or 7 pre-sp3 hotfixes). i also downloaded and installed directx 8.1 (comes with xp). in fact i went crazy and updated my bios, java run-time environment and all drivers for my hardware (graphics, sound, intellitype stuff, intellipoint stuff, etc... lol)Originally posted by Witch_King

Do you know that Winddows XP is actualy Win NT 5.1
Thus It almoust same as Win 2K (NT 5.00) but with few twik-up's (skin support, few new dll libraries, VERY colorful interface that is "so easy to use" that you can't find what you need enymore, etc.)

Have you formatted your hard drive when you install Windows XP? Maybe that's why it runs so much better...
So is it the pro version that you installed?
And I still don't get with clear type fonts are...
I hope that as programmers we all BUY software and would never pirate the stuff (as we get paid to write the stuff).

MS is looking to stop the copier's so now need to get a new serial number when you setup based on your hardware and if you change your hardware need another. Soon XP will be subscription not 'owned'. So you will have to pay each year.
Don't think MS will not be checking thru cookies ect that you have vaild version of XP with the MS Passport/messenger ect. I had heard they put serials deep in the beta versions so they can tell who is cracking/distributing the copies.
Best to wait. It will take a little while forusers to find the bugs and MS fix them. Stay with Win2000 or 98SE.
