It's been ages since I heard from college girl, she's finally back at least on this board anyways, and about your Q, I have no idea. It might help if you state what the "lovely" thing is, wait never mind I still wouldn't understand.

You never plan on working in IT?

As for the main question, when I had Oracle setup on my workstation at work the DBAs did it. I do remember them changing the TNS but I can't remember what they did.

I haven't tried Oracle yet. Although I hope I will in near future, because it seems stable and stuff like that. What is Oracle used for?

BTW: is Oracle "Open Source" database?

Oracle is one of the largest database corporations. I haven't worked with the Forms Developer, but I have done enough other stuff to know what to tweak to connect to an instance What is the error you get ? "Cannot resolve service name" ?

No. It's probably the most expensive one.

Anyone else find this amusing? If you're not sure what the product is, what seems stable about it, the name?

MySQL is open source, Oracle is very expensive.

    To CG:
I'd love to help but all of my DB work was with Microsoft stuff.

I don't know Oracle Forms Developer, so I have to take some guesses here

You connect to a datasource by giving three things:

    Username, Password, Datasource
    (USR;PWD;DSN)

tnsnames.ora is a text file that specifies where to find the database server that belongs to the Datasource name you gave.
It's a config file that lists names and technical descriptions ( host name, IP maybe, probably Port etc )

    Example:

You want to connect as "CG" to the database named "X" with a given password. The program now looks up X in the tnsnames.ora. If there is no entry like "X = ...", the client won't know where to connect to, and will fail with the message you got, which means it could not resolve the name you gave into a technical description that could be used for connecting.

It's next to impossible to give a correct description without the technical data of your installation of the server, the host name etc. To be honest, when this happens at work, we always have one file where it is correct and copy&paste that part.

Oracle Support is ok. They will most likely point you to a page ( or rather two or three chapters ) of the manual that tells what to do in detail.

If you need more info, you can send me the file by PM ( shouldn't be large and I'm not at work for two days, so not available at the mail address given here ).
