    Language

I deleted some threads for language. In the last days, there were a huge amount of sex/dirty jokes and profanity. Please watch your language when you post, this board is frequented by kids. Also, open language might be offensive to people of various religious backgrounds.

I personally think most of it was dead funny, but please watch your language in the future

    To the Reporter:

Please don't flood us with reports. Reporting posts once for each thread is sufficient. I was close to ignoring them all and treat it as junkmail/flooding/misuse.

    oh you spoil sport !!!!!
those deleted threads were the funniest ive ever read !!!
kids tell these jokes when they are about 11 anyway, they aren't learning anything.
all this anti-bad language is cobblers, the worst language i hear is when the kids are coming home from school !!!!

anyway why can't you make the board for over 16's ????? then we can all have a laugh without worrying. its a pain having to worry about kiddies.....

i personally find this crap much more offensive -

    CHICKENS + BRAINLESS = AMERICANS

    (from WW2 thread)

    edit

and to 'The reporter' - you are a boring, /*del. -nv, mod */ person. get a life and chill out.

    >those deleted threads were the funniest ive ever read !!!

Yep, me too. But that isn't the point. The point is this is a forum for C-Programming, suitable for all ages. And those posts were violating the rules. I admit that the moderators, by not deleting the first posts in this direction, played a part in these threads. We are probably all adults and had a good laugh, but it's our job to keep these boards clean, and we do.

    >anyway why can't you make the board for over 16's ?????

Because the people seeking help aren't all over 16. And that's what this board is for, providing programming help.

    >CHICKENS + BRAINLESS = AMERICANS

This is not an insult. It's simply stupid. I guess noone reported it, because noone got offended over such a dumb remark. It's grammar school level argumentation, appropriate for all age groups

i will try to comply, but where are the 'rules', can't find them in FAQ.
presume profanity and religous defamation are the main rules....

I agree with nvoigt that this board is visited by people of all ages. And not only of all ages, but also of all nationalities and very different background. So to keep this place a nice place, take care of your language.

That thread was funny but not appropriate for this forum. I enjoyed it but I think the mods did the right thing. And no age limit on this board please. And to say that people under 16 don't have anything to say is to generalize things alittle bit to much.

don't kiddies have their own boards : where they can talk about how to talk to girls/boys without wanting to throw up, sqeezing spots, drinking beer when their parents aren't around, being 'elite', how to stop their feet smelling, how cool they are, backstreet boys, spice girls, igniting their own farts, bicycles, scateboards , modern history (ie after 1990), eating in macdonalds, vandalising everything they see, giggling at the girl/boy next doors knickers on the line, who's the coolest singer/actor/whatever, giggling at foreigners/cripples/anyone older than 20, watching buffy/sesame street/whatever, not doing their homework, not going to school, how depressed they are cos fred/nancy/whatever doesn't fancy them, how mean their parents are to make them go to bed b4 11:00pm/get up b4 11:00am/do some chores/use a knife &fork when eating...................etc

actually i guess its a fair point, i'll be watching my language etc etc etc

jokes aren't meant to be clean. i posted a clean joke in the clean jokes thread... when you read it you'll understand.

why not have two off topic forums: one called off-topic filled with general stuff, questions, and conversations

    and another one labeled prognography?
or better yet, labeled "discussion about the reichstag's leftists rights policy" so the juviniles ignore it completely? and put dirty jokes, bad language posts, and general fat chewing in there?

It's also annoying to have to drive behind old farts. Should we put an age restriction the roads, too?

he he, what do you Americans know about driving fast ???
    55 mph !!!! hehe, you don't even need a 5th gear !!!

i was recently fined for doing 60mph in a 40 mph zone, i bet 60mph is like "wow thats fast!" for you guys !!!!
for us its annoying slow, just do 60 till i get to the motorway then take it up to 85 or so, and at 85 guys are behind me flashing, i have to pull over and let em past !!

i watched an American Cop Chase program last week, the cops chasing a guy, hes saying down the radio "were going 60mph now, 70....jesus this guys CRAZY..HE'S NOW DOING 80mph ON THE FREEWAY !!" 80 !!! he he I did laff !! oooh 80, what a speed freak !!!!

usually ppl here go about 10 mph above the speed limit on highways. you can't slow down if the ppl in back of you are close to bumping into you anyway. it's much more personal preference than anything countries enforce.

    getting back to the topic...
i understand this is a board owned and regulated by the owner. but bad language is a trivial thing. it doesn't matter. if people get offended, people get offended.

we should segregate the off-topic forum to let dirty joke posters post where others won't be offended. the arguement that bad language and/or dirty jokes will warp the mind is stupid, imho.

there are many reasons to delete obsceneties, dirty jokes, or slander of any kind. people can get offended by it. kids may hear it, who are impressionable. they may distract people from the main intent of the board.

people will be offended no matter what you do. you can't create a totally inoffensive enviroment, anywhere. the right to say something despite the fact that it offends someone is a fundamental right.

i'm under 18, and i see/hear this kind of language whenever i listen to people, watch tv or a movie, listen to music, or just plain read. children are not our main concern. we would be no different than society as a whole. restricting this kind of speech based on that would make kids think of us as controlling, which would be a bad idea in a forum designed to let people express themselves to help others.

the reason we have an off-topic forum is to provide a place for the members of our community to discuss non-c programming topics. the people have free reign over the topic, be it the church of scientology or assembly programming.

don't kiddies have their own boards : where they can talk about how to talk to girls/boys without wanting to throw up, sqeezing spots, ...... etc
There are also special boards for funny/dirty jokes
it doesn't matter. whenever people collect, they talk. we can't decide where people are supposed to go to talk.
That thread was funny but not appropriate for this forum. I enjoyed it but I think the mods did the right thing.
this gets back to my point. we can't decide what is appropriate for the community. if something is funny, is it appropriate? is it appropriate if it's about sex? what if it's both funny and about sex? what if it's meant to sound like it's about sex, but it's really misleading the reader to think about sex while talking about something else? (i.e., advertising )

when are children allowed to read or listen to the horrors of dirty material on a C Programming Board? this is an international board, and the age limits of different countries' laws vary.

germany bans na zi web-sites online. this forum (or at least flashdaddee, i think this one too) bans the word nazi. does this include the topic of who is most credited for the success at world war 2?

I agree with nvoigt that this board is visited by people of all ages. And not only of all ages, but also of all nationalities and very different background. So to keep this place a nice place, take care of your language
why would nationality matter? an american might be offended by an anti-american topic. an indian might be offended of the community's opinions toward the conflict with pakistan. if i insult someone, do i insult there nationality, too?

a background is a similar thing. one person may be a newbie and another might have grown up with computers, working with fortran, then c, then c++. does this prohibit the experienced one from critisizing the newbie's code? does it prohibit him from insulting the newbie? insulting a newbie is a bad thing, if its over some lack of skill. but is it worth deleting the matter and forgetting about it?
i will try to comply, but where are the 'rules', can't find them in FAQ.
presume profanity and religous defamation are the main rules....
profanity is either speech which is meant to disgust people, or is disgusting toward someone(anyone), or is just one of the seven words you can't say on tv. profanity does waste time and disgust people. it is in the eye of the beholder, though. casual use of a word in an off-topic forum doesn't hurt anyone. on the other hand, a post full of that word is clearly meant to be repulsive. still, profanity isn't just limited to words. it could be a collection of 1337 symbols, alternating caps, and buzzwords that make no sense to anyone but the author. who decides?
We are probably all adults and had a good laugh, but it's our job to keep these boards clean, and we do.
what is clean? why keep it clean? see above response.
i personally find this crap much more offensive -

    CHICKENS + BRAINLESS = AMERICANS
i also find this offensive. shouldn't it be minus BRAIN, anyway?
as someone said before, it's appropriate for all ages. i might be offended, but my opinion doesn't matter in a world where stopping this speech is as difficult as clicking the back button.

I deleted some threads for language. In the last days, there were a huge amount of sex/dirty jokes and profanity. Please watch your language when you post, this board is frequented by kids.
what caused people to post huge amounts of this material? it's funny. people post stuff like this to make other people laugh. like someone said before, it's probably the kids who do most of the sex/dirty jokes and profanity posting.
Also, open language might be offensive to people of various religious backgrounds.

I personally think most of it was dead funny, but please watch your language in the future
closed language is offensive to people of other backgrounds, and people like me. do we respect one group of people at another's expense?

thanks for taking the time to read this through. or if you just skipped over it, at least glance at the end part.

    >>they may distract people from the main intent of the board.

This would be the most noteworthy point mentioned yet. Keeping a lid on it at the start ensures that this board will stay on course. There so many other crappy boards out there and i'd hate to see this one degenerate.
