    Recommendations…?

Can anyone recommend a good hard drive copying utility. I’ve just ordered Partition Magic, but I think that the copy utility will only copy from one partition to another on the same disk (well that’s the impression I got from the site’s FAQs).

As I’ve just forked out on this, it would be great if I could get the disk copy utility on freeware, though I realise I might be asking for too much here.

    TIA

I've used partition magic for a coupla years now. It's great.
I've had all kinds of problems formatting and partioning both
ide and scsi drives under Win Me. Partion Magic has always
recognizes the drive and partitions it every time.
    Wise choice, Fordy.

Oh, I see. Wait let me check. (boots up pm6.0...) Looks like
you're luck. There is a copy option. Well...wait a minute. It
will allow you to copy partitions but that dosen't mean it will
allow you to transfer your boot system from one disk to
another. PM is mainly a partition manipulator. But as far as
copying your operating system, too, on the fly, I don't really
think so. You need a utility that works independent from
(let's assume) Windows. That kind of utility is usually included
with the utility disk that comes with you new hard drive.
Maxtor provides such a program with its hard drives.

There might be other hd copying programs available too, I'm
sure. I'll check my files, see if I do, and get back to you. I
can always upload it to my web site for you to grab if I do
    find anything.

What kind of hd's are involved? Is one of them new? If it
is check the installation disk that came with it for a drive
    copying utility.

One disk was part of an Aptiva setup - no luck there.

The other one is being mailed to me, and I dont know what will come with it (Ebay).

Fordy, I uploaded Disk Image 5 to my site, flashdaddee.com.
There are 9 files prefixed with DI5.

Use the following serial number: DY500EN10WS-110204

It looks like this program allows you to backup your hd via
blank cd's. There are help files and stuff. It's a pretty big
program. Let me know when you're through d/l ing it so
I can take it off the site. If it dosen't work I have Norton's
Ghost, which I can upload for you.

    What a cool proggie....

    Partition Magic is superb.

I got because I heard it was good for resizing partitions and when I saw it on Ebay I though...."Cool".

I wanted to put another harddrive on my spare and put Linux on it. I used PM to create the linux root and swap partitions (while booted into Win98), and the documentation to do this was only a page and a half long - simple. None of that Disk Druid crap, and I could stay away from linux's own fdisk ::shudder::.

The other proggie on the PM disk was Boot Magic. As soon as I created the partitions, I added the linux partition to BM and after installation, I am now able to boot between OS's effortlessly.

Sorry if I sound like an advert, but I am well impressed with this. If anyone wants a util that will easily add linux to an already running PC - this does a great job.
