If you gave up DOS doubleanti than we could get rid of this board and put up a C# board.

...besides now DOS is a DOS virtual machine that runs through the Win32 API on all modern versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems. Many DOS apps do not even run any more in the virtual machine. You can not write programs to directly access hardware, if any of those commands still work it is only because they are re-interpreted by Win32, which contols all kernal mode processes.

They only reason why this board should exist is because there are still some very old compilers out there that are being used to educate 'C' programmers. There is no other reason!

if that's the general consensus, then it is an honor to be the flag bearer of an entire message board!!! just the same, i agree... (not with the C# part necessarily, just the 'if doubleanti gave up' part...) you have a good point... sheesh... wierd... i thought i already made myself clear, or unclear, for the matter... with my post on the gen disc a while back...

I even question the need for the 'Windows' board by mid 2002, since Visual C++ and MFC will not likely be continued. Win32/COM is going to be phased out by .NET. Applications running on WinXP. They will function through the .NET framework which is built into the operating system. We are moving into new territory indeed that is being designed ultimately for I64 technology.

I'm still waiting for .NET to reveal itself, however I'm certain that DOS is not very helpful to anyone.

so your saying there should be no DOS board but a .NET board instead?

if you want a .NET board go to the den of evil itself at

Yeah I'm sure everyone in the whole world will magically start developing for Windows XP. Generally speaking, home users account for a very small percentage of systems users of in-house software.

Most Information Systems that have been established in organisations aren't likely to jump ship to a new OS if it is not cost feasible or will not create competitive advantage. What is best isn't always what is needed.

Example: at least 80% of all databases in the US are still written in COBOL with a Oracle or otherwise interface. COBOL is an ancient language in computer terms, but why is it still used? Cause it does the job, and it would be too expensive to upgrade the platform.

Why if companies are willing to use COBOL for more that 20 years, would they in two years jump XP? It won't happen. If there can be no real justification other than a new GUI, then it won't be implemented. Think in terms of installing XP, training users, upgrading hardware, and so on - very expensive for just a new OS.

I fail to see your logic in there not being a need for a Windows board. I doubt many software companies could afford to simply stop providing Win9x compatitble software, in there are still even 50% of organisations using XP.
