CBDTPA (or whatever the acronym was)

remember e-mailing a letter to your congress man? here's my reply:
    from Representative John Olver (D-Mass)
Dear Jeremy: (name changed to protect me)

Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 2048, the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act (SSSCA).

As you know, S. 2048 would require manufacturers of computers and consumer electronics devices to work with content providers and consumer groups to develop copy protection technology within one year. If these groups fail, the Federal Communications Commission would intervene with its own solution to prevent copyright piracy. Currently, S. 2048 is before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

Legislation like S. 2048 has many implications for the technology industry and consumers. Some technology companies believe government mandated copyright piracy solutions would threaten their business, while others complain that the illegal copying of content costs industries billions of dollars every year, and it discourages future production. Clearly, we need to develop a solution that gives consumers access to more goods and services without penalizing those provide these goods and services. (this sentence was typed exactly as it was with errors)

Please be assured I will keep your thoughts in mind if S. 2048 comes to the House of Representatives for a vote.

Thanks you again for contacting me. Please let me know if you have any more questions or concerns.

    Sincerely,

    (signature)

    John W. Olver
    Member of Congress

Not living in the US (and having no intention to return to work), I'm all for it.

Will either create a huge new area of code to work on (as we all move to what US big business wants), or will section off the US as an IT backwater, while the rest of us continue as normal. Killing all small software development and driving the research $ elsewhere. (cheaper to develop and test , then adapt to the US market)

Not that I think it can work.....

(IMHO there is still a 50:50 your government will adopt the policy.)

    "IMHO

    (In My Honest Opinion)

there is still a 50:50 your government will adopt the policy."

Because there seems little reason to annoy the rest of the world with a 30% steel tariff, but Bush did. Now Europe is hitting back with some 100% tariffs on US goods. Except the big steel US producers wanted the tariff rather than cut workers and reduce production costs.

There is no one but large polluting companies that don't want better environmental controls.
So why is the US drilling for oil in the Alaskan wilderness?
Why did you not ratify the Kyoto protocol?

It would cost big business (so they threaten to cut staff),
    lost jobs = lost votes;
    lost campaign funds = many lost votes;
lost votes = no second term.

Don't underestimate the politican's vote buying power of Sony, Disney ect who want this to happen. If the politicians can't get good coverage on TV, they can't win an election.

What if the TV networks will only show politicians in a good light if they voted for their copyright?
What if they gave politicians a huge discount on campaign ads if they supported their copyright?

the SSSCA will NEVER FLY! it is a serious constitutional violation, it would kill foreign buisness domestic buisness, not to mention they are gonna get ***** slapped. it would not only kill small buisness but also open source!( anyone see a pattern here? ),
the only hope it has is ignorance! which is pretty damn good! since the DMCA passed im sure our Congressmen/Senators know as much about the whole computing industry as wet ****, and the RIAA, Disney, the MPAA, ect... will get up there tell their lies, spread their BS about how if this doesnt pass the world will end! and they will be crucified...

heres my problem with this, the SSSCA goes way beyond needed copy protection to the point of stupidity, why? why go so far? why push it well beyond its limits to begin with? there are a lot of other motives for this and a lot of silent supporters, if this passses there's gonna be hell to pay, you can bet the farm on that one.

    read between the lines
(your government panders to big business)
    ygfperson
(and it is more concerned with getting re-elected than doing the right thing)
or I will have to explain this again.
    (got it now?)

If it was you or me who wanted it, no chance.
That chance though, can be bought.

i disagree. your 50:50 guess is based on your dislike for congress. i don't see any real facts behind your opinion.

politicans accept money and advice from lobbyists, who come from big businesses, labor unions, and interest groups. they are pandering to their voters. some voters want businesses to succeed. some voters hate big businesses.

the cbdtpa is about government regulation of software to prevent copyright infringement. the same voters who are for big businesses (republicans) are against government regulation. in our rightist government, a lot of people are against more government regulation. politicians aren't going to agree with disney just because there's money involved.

and for the cynical people out there: the hardware industry opposes this, too. they have money, just like the entertainment industry. why do you think the dvd encryption is only 5 bytes long?
