    Establish newsgroup..

    Hi,

I was wondering how a newsgroup is created? Anyone know?

    Its complicated.

First, there are types of newsgroups. Mainstream, and alt. All the mainstream groups are created by a long and overly comlicated process. alt groups, which your would probably want, are simpler.

alt newgroups are "created" simply by posting a special "newsgroup creation message" to alt.config. However, all this does is make the newgroup exist. It needs to be "propagated" first. This is complicated.

Talk to the folks in alt.config. You will get flamed like you have never been flamed before, but if you survive, you might be able to make a group.

Actually they are the precursor to this type of forum.

Basically, you send something similiar to an email to a news server, which forwards it to every news server on the planet that carries that group. Then, users can log into their own news server and access that group, and see the messages.

Most email programs have newsgroups support. Press ctrl-w in outlook. Alternatively, you could download a program like Agent www.forte.com that will do newsgroups for you.

DISCLAIMER - Newsgroups in general are NOT moderated. As with any such medium, you may, accidentally or intentionally, come across material which may be objectionable or illegal in your nation.

News servers are similar to forums like this one, however they use thier own NNTP protocol. A news group is sort of like a message board, although there is normally a hierarchy in place (eg alt.games.quake or comp.lang.c++). Here's a site that lists some free news servers:
