sorry to bump this but I just have to tell everyone:
if you have some of the symptoms of the above your drive might be going bad.
Mine did, my drive is dying!
    *pumps harddrive, breathes into plug*
It is still working but after the next time I shut it down I most likly won't be able to get it back up.
OH! by the way, where does outlook store the e-mail?
is it in a big file that I can copy?
new hard drive should come from compaq in about a week.

Do the following (if you havn't already):
    A. back up your hard drive.
    B. no, reallly, do the above.
    C. MAKE SURE YOU DO A!!!
    D. see A

hehe.. my other comp (133 MHz one ) has had this same hard drive for five years and it's just gone bad. It still has allitle juice, so i'm uninstalling everything and getting prepared to instal BeOS on the remaining 4 GB drive that'll not be dead.

Mine has been through a total of 76 hours of flying in the very turbulent pacific ocean, it still uses Windows 3, it's older than I am, and it works fine. Has never had a replaced drive.

I can tell you right now that a the skiff rides I am talking about are much worse than the planes trips I have gone on, I have been over the pacific in a plane.
I should also mention that my my family fishes for a living, thats 3-4 months of big motor vibrations and rough seas.

what type of model was yours though? I heard that toshiba's are better built (I have a 3 year old toshiba laptop that now runs the GPS on the fishing boat, never had ANY hardware issues with it).
