    Profanity

Ok I come here to address an issue. I have noticed, an increase in profanity and inappropriate language recently. I spent ten minutes yesterday editing one thread alone.

We have programmers of all ages here on this web site. Therefore, we like to keep content on the board at a PG level. For that reason I would ask everyone to refrain from using profanity or any inappropriate language. This would include the S P A C E I T O U T method and the *I*M**N*O*T**C*U*R*S*I*N*G* method, and links to pornographic web sites within posts.

Also it is my personal belief that if you really need to use profanity to express your opinion is it really a well thought out opinion anyway?

Thank you all for your cooperation.

I'm in 100% agreement with you on this one. I don't think that a programming site needs all that profanity or pornography on it, and I'd appreciate if people didn't post such content on the site.

i agree, although i haven't really noticed it. i suggest replacing such language with a phrase along the lines of:
(and btw, i want you. bad.)

    or

(and btw, i don't know what i'm talking about.)

    or even

(and btw, i disagree with my previous post. hanson, vanilla ice, and sesame street all rock!)

this should convince the swearers among us to just shut up

Keeping it clean is fine in most cases, yet antiseptic, politically- correct speech doesn't work and won't be barred. Not even on a privately run message board.

But if one is trying to spread opinions, the most easiest way to gratify one's emotional reaction is to talk in the vernacular, and common vernacular language has embraced swearing as less profane with every passing generation; besides, a five letter word can invoke an emotional response that is far more powerful than a clean word. Saying "This cooking tastes like poopoo!", for example, takes more time for the concept of one expressing disdain for somebody's cooking as quickly as "This cooking tastes like *removed for the sake of the children, who will learn it a day later from their friends*". And when it comes to taking saving time and space, the cost of saving bandwidth on shorter messages on a forum should be a relief for those who fork over their hard earned cash to pay the hosting.

So, in forth, I must agree somewhat with this mod's request; yet at the same time I cannot fully comply.

    >Also it is my personal belief that if you really need to use >profanity to express your opinion is it really a well thought out >opinion anyway?

That can be debated, as the protesters of the 60's and 70's, who marched through Washington DC with the opinion that the Vietnam war was wrong, used profanity profusely.

No offense to the fans of Tipper Gore out there, but please try and be a little more open minded. Censorship only leads to evil things like the CBDTPA, which severly hinders and stops many forms of self expression.

Scourfish, Kermi3... I'm with you on this one...

I'd have to agree with both of you. I'm a cussin S.O.B. myself and see no reason that i shouldnt fully use any and all words at my disposal. English is limited enough as it is.

However... This is a private message board (as mentioned) and I'm not one to force anything on people who do not wish to hear/read it. Therefor i fully support removing the generally offensive language (and will myself aid in doing so).

I might utter the occasional four (thats four, not five as scourfish mentions ) letter word but I'm not obnoxious about it. I'm happy to keep it to myself, as it harms me not at all to restrict my vocabulary.

I make full utilization of profanity daily. I still do not think that it is professional, proper, or polite... reguardless of the application.

    This cookie tastes like *

    or

    This cookie is horrible.

Curse with your friends... not with your collegues and contemporaries. If you friends are both, then know when things are casual and when they are professional and don't mix the two.

Sometimes restraint from doing what you could do when you want to, makes you a more rounded person. Because let's face it... even though we may just see them as mere words, and descriptive ones at that, the remainder of the english speaking world doesn't.

I am one of the people that wants censorship. Lock it down. We are free to speak and write how ever we want............... someplace else.

ALL YOU MODERATORS ARE JUST (and btw, i disagree with my previous post. hanson, vanilla ice, and sesame street all rock!) PEICES OF (I consider Britney Spears to be a talanted performer and I respect her views and opinions.)!!!!!

AND ANY ONE WHO DISAGREES IS A (The doctor said the the swelling should go down within a week, but I shouldn't think about kids any time soon.)!!!!!!!!

    Hmmmm. . . . . . .

English is limited enough as it is
wha. . . English is the most versitile language i know (5 natural, 1 code).

[tirade] aside from the 8 million words, about 7 million more than the most verbose romantic/germanic, we have also word order placement, cadence varation, multiple meanings for each gerund depending on sysntax, punctuation, facial expressions, even the time of day (should i bother to mention, "synslag", "intertype", and just an abyss of undocumentable slang terms. [/tirade]

gosh, if anything i'd say English is too limitless.

How lovely that Epoc misspells half of his post (excluding any filtered words)

Anyway, I couldn't disagree more. Why expose the kids to things even moreso? Not to mention the fact that it's just not polite speach in a board like this where you're conversing with total strangers.

How come people who complain about free speech rarely have anything worth while to say?
