when I turn my pc on...

How do I stop certain programs starting up when I turn my pc on? when I look at all the programs running, I have this list:

    Imgicon
    Gbpoll
    Mdm
    Armon32a
    Arupld32a
    Systray
    Point32
    Rundll32
    Navapw32
    Gbmenu
    Iowatch
    Wkcalrem
    Loadqm
    Rnaapp

How do I stop them starting? Isnt there a file in which I can delete parts to prevent this? Oh and which are the essential programs?

msconfig is the easiest way I've found to do that.
Although I've only ever seen it in windows XP, I have no clue if it's in other versions or not.
To get to it you just go to "Run" in the start menu and type in "msconfig".
Its reasonably simple to use, under xp the last tab is titled "Startup". That lists most of the programs that will start with windows and they are mostly safe to disable.

in the reg this is where all the startup prog are listed.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURR EN
    TVERSION\RUN

    delete the keys neccessary

from your list, what i can say is -->

things that are not needed (i think)
Imgicon - looks like an imaging/icon thing
Mdm - debugger manger or something
    Rundll32 - dll/executable runner - needed??

    thing that are Needed
    Systray - your system tray
    Navapw32 - AV

    dont know about the following
    Gbpoll
    Armon32a
    Arupld32a
    Point32
    Gbmenu
    Iowatch - input output watcher??
    Wkcalrem
Loadqm - loads QM whats that??
Rnaapp - modem related i think?? why is this running?

maybe somebody else can help you better.

do NOT take out Rundll32... you need this...

    i would remove

    gbpoll
    imgicon
    mdm
    the 2 A ones...
Iowatch (sounds like Iomega software to check drives for disks)
    wkcalrem

it depends... take everything out of your startup under Start->Programs->Startup

then go into msconfig... usually if you remove something important, it will add it back in btw... i would try to find out what some of those are tho... you might need them

mdm is a MSVC app I think. Microsoft Developer ?.

I don't think mdm is part of visual studio.
I'm pretty sure it was on machines with out visual studio installed.
Then again, quite a few bits are packaged with internet explorer, so it could still be.

Machine Debug Manager. Windows 98/ME. This is used purely by Technically Advanced Users and Developers, and in very specific cases at that. It is not needed in most normal day-to-day uses of a PC.

    Recommendation :
    Disable using Startup Manager

many thanks all, this has been very helpful

It seems that mdm.exe is a stubborn process and even after disabling in the msconfig, it starts up again when I connect to the internet. Anyone know how to permanently disable it??

I would make a backup before editing the Reg file.
msconfig, which can be executed by typing msconfig into the "run" box, is avaliable, I think, in MSW98+
