    >>I've heard sales of the series have gone through the roof with FOTR looming on the horizon

Oh man - I'm drooling over the chance to see the first film.

I read the trilogy in uni as well as the hobbit. I tried Simarrillion (Is that the correct title?) but gave up after a few chapters - didnt enjoy it.

turn on the first switch, after a while turn it off.
then turn on the second switch and enter room
if there is light it is the second switch
if there is not light and the lamp is warm it is the first switch
if there is not light and the lamp is cold it is the third switch

It's something like that, anyways. I've also seen the History of the Ring in Barnes and Noble, written by Tolkien's son - that any good?

Dont know - never looked at it. The fact that it was written by his son would instantly put me off it - more so than if it was written by anyone else. (maybe being a little too pessimistic...Judge a book by its cover......)

The only good father & son author team that comes to my mind is Kingsley & Martin Amis.

You can't change the rules as you go along. As far as I'm concerned my answer was correct according to the question .

OK, if you're gonna do it like that, fine. You're right. However, I didn't think I was changing the rules - just clarifying. If you just used what I set out to begin with, then spliff woulda been right when he said to use a stopwatch.

Yeah, that's true because you never actually stated you had to use the hourglasses.

Alright - you have to use the the hourglasses AND ONLY the hourglasses. Timing starts when one of the hourglasses is flipped. You can't jsut guess and say "It looks about halfway done". You can't use other loopholes; it's purely a math thing...

Zen, you were on the righ track...

    to Govtcheez

    you flip both hourglasses.
    1) after the 4 min. is over you turn it upside down.
    2) after 3 min. you have 1 minute left in the 4 min. hourglass and the 7 min. hourglass is empty.
    3) then you turn the 7 min. hourglass and
    4) when the 4 min. hourglass
is empty you turn the 7 min. hourglass again.
    5) after it is empty, you have 9 minutes

    well..difficult...
are you sure that the tv was really a tv and the lights was
    really the lights?
