    >What is it?

    An operating system.

    >Is it better than windows (hopefully).

Well, it's cheaper. Some believe it's better. It really depends what you want out of your operating system.

    >Can it run on IBM conpatibals?

    Yes.

    >What language was it qritten in?

Java, and QBasic (for low level hardware access).

    ok...

Linux was originaly written in C by a guy named Linus hence the name Linux its symbol is a penguin named Tux it is a penguin because in Linus's childhood at a zoo one went crazy and tried to attack him. It is usually free meaning you can download it of a website such as slackware.com or just search google for linux distros. It is much more secure then windows, but harder to install sometimes and isn't the most easy thing to use but once you get the hang of it everything is easy. Windows being owned by microsoft has a lot of options but everything for windows is usually expensive when a lot of things for Linux are free such as compilers, editors, grapic editing programs, and such. It is part of the open source movement so if you use it you will be too thats basicly it in a nutshell kind of...

C'mon, don't be stupid - everyone knows C's too slow to write anything decent in. Definitely a small Perl script.
