We here in West Australia have a farmer who started his own country and is still going. Prince Lenard of Hutt River Provence.
We have big farms here, WA being four times the size of Texas with a population of under 1.5mill (>1Mil of which live in the capital Perth)

And there was that guy trying to make a tax haven out of a disused pylon in the ocean.

Here is the kicker / reason for 'Freedonia'

"The Freedonian $50 commemorative coin is available for $20 USD. To obtain Freedonian coins, please send a personal check or money order made
    out to "Freedonia",

    Principality of Freedonia
    5337 Val Verde
    Houston, TX 77056
    USA "

whats the bet you don'tget one.
"Man alone suffers so excruciatingly in the world that he was compelled to invent laughter."
    Friedrich Nietzsche

"I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars......the rest I squandered."
    George Best

"If you are going through hell....keep going."
    Winston Churchill

Why does an independent country have an address in Texas?

His country has no land or official currency (besides those lame-o collector's coins) and it's been around for 9 years already?

Yup - the country exists solely in cyberspace. It's not really a country at all. It's just some rich highschool kid's idea of fun, because he has no friends and would rather have deranged people grovveling under his feet anyhow.
