    Work experience

Hi. I was wondering if any of you programming guru's are from Glasgow. If so, do you know any places I could get work experience that do programming (looking for a trusted place)? I'm very interested in it and might be fun for me to see how they do things etc. Even if your not from Glasgow, any idea how I could find good, trusted place that could perhaps give me work experience?

I've to hand in a form to my school telling them the company and they will send someone out to do health and safety checks.

    Thank you very much.

In other words, investigate the contents of your urine? You need to take a stand against that crap.

I read it the other way around -- that the school would do an HSC check (which corresponds, I think, to our OSHA) on the company.

That's what i assumed he meant as well.

Probably a liability issue with letting students work via a school program.

    Okay -- I'm just being a pessimist.

Yep, that's correct. Everything you do in the UK has to be H&S reviewed first. So brewbuck, you're not far off :P

wouldnt it make it harder for students to get a place to be if the place has to be inspected?

I know for sure that if I owned my own company I would for sure not invite some guy to check out the dust level on my lamps....

As for getting a place to be, burn things you have made to a cd and write up a small CV and start walking around. Never underestimate the value of showing your own face.

My school encourages people to find out placements on their own because you aren't guaranteed a place if you try to get one through the councils(?) work experience database. And I seriously doubt they would have any place that would suit my interests.

I've got plenty of time anyway, I've to hand the form in by August the 22nd.

Also, I'm curious... did any of you guys/girls go to a software development place for work experience, or anything computing related?

    Thanks again.

My first professional programming experience ( as In I got paid) was when I was 10. The manager of the local Radio Shack paid me $10 to edit a display program they had so it would print out to the printer. I go tthat job on the strength of an in store 'interview'. My dad and I were up there lookign at printers and we got to talking to the guy.

I did my work experience in the IT department of a local company. Spent most of my time developing an Access database to log user calls and track problems. Wasn't allowed to do any programming, as they wouldn't be able to maintain it!! :S
