My brother's a mormon, they are nice people, but I just couldnt get past the whole magic underwear thing. It just seems to have a lot of hokey traditions. Not that it has any more or less than any other religion, maybe that's why im a Buddhist.

Buddhism as practiced by many Westerners tends to obscure the very large body of "weird" practices that you'd find in the East.

I think the Buddha would be baffled by what many Buddhists do. Not that he would necessarily disapprove of it, just that it really has nothing to do with the point he was trying to make...

After visiting Thailand I have found Buddhism to be a wonderful way of life.
I, however, am a Germanic Heathen.
But, we shouldn't betalking about this now should we?

Because it's off-topic or because it's a forbidden topic? I sure hope you mean the former..

Because most people's prejudice towards their own religion, coupled with their ignorance and skewed view of others, inevitably leads to pointless, heated debates.

But the debates of old bring back such good memories!

Well I can tell you I'm a profound atheist and with me religious debates can only happen if the person on the other side is prepared to hear things like "god does not exist" and remain objective without all the sanctimonious crap that usually follows one of such observations.

But how do you know god does not exist? How would you even define god? I think everyone has got over the notion of some big beardy dude sat in the clouds by now.

Personally I couldent care less. I wont believe in gods, souls, spirits or past lives until I find proof.

saying "God does not exist" is not a religious 'debate'. You've closed the debate with that sentence. You can't have a debate without conceding some of the other sides points.

The existance of God is quite the meaningless question. If there is no valid support for that statement, in effect, you are removing the ability to say that things which do not exist don't exist. Defying the ability to define existance is not support for God.

Only on the GD board does a coffee discussion turn to religion thread.

Naturally the quote was used simply to exercise a point, not as a de facto example. That point being, I cannot endure a religious debate if it can't be discussed in an objective manner in which participants (me included) agree they may hear things that are going to deeply question their beliefs or even border the offensive according to their faith or lack of it.

One of the best religious debates I witnessed in my life happened in the form of a book. I really need to research this because I can no longer remember the authors or book names, but what happened was that one author wrote a book abut the existence of god and the value of our (mankind) faiths. In response to that book, another author wrote a book questioning the previous one.

The arguments in both books (despite the obvious bias on both sides) and the respect both authors shared for the other were one of the most enlightening experiences I had th pleasure to be a part of.

So, who prays to the coffee god?

I get maybe two dozen requests for help with some sort of programming or design problem every day. Most have more sense than to send me hundreds of lines of code. If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.
