That could very well be because it's not out yet...
    (refering to .NET)

Idiots, this forum is full of idiots!!! Beta 2 has been out for a long time, and the full version has been out for about a week (I'm not sure how long but i KNOW it's out, I have a few friends who haev it). Why do so many people make declarations when they have no evidence to support it?

    >) how is beos similar/different to linux?<

This is judgement from my use of both OS's only:

    Similarities:

    a. I guess the terminals are very similar.
    b. The communities behind each OS are insanely dimented and stubborn. (I'm sure both can agree to this as well. )

    Differences:

    a. BeOS is better.
    b. BeOS uses BeFS as native FS. Linux uses the ext2 FS as native. (Although, BeOS can read ext2 and Linux can read BeFS [with a driver].)
    c. BeOS is more stable - has crashed once since I've been using it. Linux has crashed a few times on me.
    d. Linux is good for networking; BeOS is good for multimedia.
    e. BeOS is better for average to advanced users as far as interface and stuff goes. Linux is a little more for advanced I think.
    f. BeOS is microkernel. Linux is monolithic.
    g. BeOS takes <10 seconds to boot. Linux takes, well, I'm sure you know.

Why not just try both OS for yourself, ygf? I'll admit that I'm naturally BeOS-biased, but I tried not to be; I tried to give you fair info, but I know I've failed.

VS.NET beta was the most widely tested and used beta in history, something like 2.5 million programmers have tested it.

I dare you to go to the bookstore and look in the programming section.

    Dean:
I don't see anything about Microsoft on your link.
Do you actually think that the company with the most commercials on TV, or the company with the girl with the best 40 year old boobs (Madonna) is, by default, the largest corporation in the world?
One thing that ........es me off is people that spout off at the mouth about something they have no clue about and/or refuse to learn more about...
You go study some more .NET

To everyone else, I suggest we all research the products we want to use, if MS has a product that fits the bill for what you want, use it!!! If there's something from Linux that works for you, use that.
I could care less, my customers want Windows, so we develop Windows apps...
Don't, for the love of Pete, choose your software based on what any one person says!

What drives people to have a deep love for a software company or products? It's ridiculous, as you're all being used by the companies. MS junkies are being led to believe that MS is the cutting edge of software..this is bull**** plain and simple. Linux users are being led to believe that using nix is morally right...this is bull**** plain and simple...do you think RedHat give a damn about it's users? They are just after money, and will spread any rot about MS because they want to gain customers.

I agree [Stealth], it seems the 'kiddies' all jump on the bandwagon of what software is cool to use, what software is uncool. The rest of us make a living writing code under the OS the BUYING public wants.
Lets face it, in most corporations you're gonna have blue collar guys using your software. Presently (in North America anyways) most of these people have never heard of Red Hat, Linux, BeOS... If you want to make a living, you have to write code they can use.

First off, I think [stealth] made a very good point.

    >is beos open-source? does it install like redhat?(i.e., partitioning, graphic gui installation, etc...)<

BeOS is not open-source. There's a project to recreate the BeOS called OpenBeOS.

The free version installs as a program under Windows. There's also a free version for Linux. Not sure how it installs.

Yes, the full version installs much like a Windows or Linux installation (i.e. partitioning, GUI, etc.).

    >I agree [Stealth], it seems the 'kiddies' all jump on the bandwagon of what software is cool to use, what software is uncool.<

I'm not sure if you were directing this at BeOS users also, but I'll take it like that for my point. I don't think anyone uses BeOS because it's a "cool" thing to do. If someone is gonna use a non-MS OS just to use a non-MS OS, they'll most likely pick Linux - it's more known. As for myself, I use BeOS because I honestly think it's a better quality OS than any I've used.

No Hillbillie, I wasn't directing this at any other OS in particular, I'm just tired of seeing these script kiddies using catch phrases and signs like M$ and MicroCr*p or Micr...........
If people really hate using the product, don't use it, don't say its crap because "my buddies' friends' buddies' uncle's dog keeper had Morpheous crash on him 'cause of Windows" or, "my CD burner don't work ' cause M$ is S**T, PS, I'm 3733T!!!"... If anyone feels that way, develop a non-MS product, or, work for MS to make their product better.

    That is all,
    Viva.

Microsoft is a monopoly because it surprised the compition, and got in on the ground floor. They don't over use there power, or over prive there Items

The intergation off there browser improved, windows greatly. It does not prevent you from uing another browser, and it is postible to remove the intergation.

As for the fact that compaines can't ship dull boot machines, and therefor microsoft is evil is also highly stupid. Go to mcdonalds, and get a pepsi. You can't does that make mcdonads evil. Go to Taco bell and order a coke, same thing you can't. Is taco bell evil?

"Is taco bell evil?" YES! The people that pick the tomatoes for the food at taco bells across the nation work in sweat-shop like conditions, with little pay and hard labor.
