    instruction manual for "l33tness"

I've put together a simple guide for l33tness, but I'm afraid the humor value might be far below expectations, so a little bit of response would be helpful as to whether or not I should trash the thing. I'm not going to kidnap your family and force them to look at it, but here it is: gozips.uakron.edu/~jwm7/l33tguide.html

    That's funny as hell, Scourfish!

May I request permission to reprint it on my website, which receives all of several hits per day?

Never trash anything you write with an eye to publishing.
My guess is you've spent a whole lot of time writing that
little ditty--too much, in fact. You need to step out of the
forrest for a while. Put your paper down for a week or so
and forget about it; then go back to it. While your forgetting
about it, you might want to try skewing up some more ideas
    to incorpoate into your work.

The premise is great and so is the start. The problem I have
reading it is you only define one of your made-up terms (l33t). Good
writing should equate to cleverness, which your piece has at
the beginning, but to be successful you have to maintain that
flair for originality. For example: you didn't explain or expound upon
how you derived the line below.

    "Good example: I am the sup4h l33t h4x0r and I am g0ing to h4x0r your c0mp and put g0at pr0n on it. "

We know what the l33t stands for, but what about the rest of
it? And in explaining it you might offer anecdotes as to how
h4x0r came to mean what you say it means. That's how your
vignette starts off and you have to maintain that line until
you find a suitable place to switch gears and take your readers
someplace new. In a nutshell--make it interesting.

Successfull writing is much like programming: it involves a hell
of a lot of detail. All those details have to be accounted for,
tied up in a neat little bundle and presented to John Q. Reader
in such a way that he'll come clamoring back for more.

If you have an itch to write, by all means scratch it. Writing is
not the simple task many people claim it to be ("Oh, I've always
meant to write, but I just never got around to it." Yeah, right.)
I spent many a youthful night sitting like a stone at my desk
urging forth thoughts that refused any coaxing--hours at a time
where the crumpled up sheets of notebook paper outnumbered
    the words I was able to put on paper. But I'm not a fiction writer;
I'm a journalist. Tha'ts an important distinction a writer has to
make about himself, too--what kind of writer am I? One thing is clear to me, though:
you have enough writing abiltiy to take it somewhere. You should
take some creative writing courses at school and hone your
skills. Your forte may or may not be where you think it is. In
any event good luck with it. Hope my advice is a help.

    Scourfish: govtcheez1.tripod.com

Rick - he didn't actually make those up - plenty of kiddiez use that crap in everyday "speech" (by speech, I mean chatting, but never mind)... Go into any AOL chat room and you'll hear a/s/l within about 3 seconds. It's awful.

Well, if you're going for accuracy of my writing, then you are way mistaken. I have no intentions of upchuking a hint of truth in this thing. Besides, spewing forth accusations before facts are given is one of the American idealisms.

I see. So he's spoofing them. That's fine, but he still has to
consider dolts like me (plenty of us out here) when he
writes. Otherwise. people are going to ask themselves:
"WTF is he talking about?" I generally avoid chat rooms
and so miss out on all the l33tness, but if properly presented
to me, I could certainly enjoy sharing a good laugh with
Scourfish and his subject matter, and I genuinely laughed
at how he arrived at l33t == elite--clever and very interesting.

If I attempted to write something that was politically correct and non-offensive, then I would be limited to "Bunnies are Fuzzy!" as a theme. And even then, somebody would think I'm some sort of wierd bunny molester. Besides, one should be able to laugh at themselves easily; I am easily insulting myself in this paper.

Who's saying you have to be politically correct? Certainly not
me. Also, there's very little, if any first person commentary in
your piece and so it escapes me how anyone is going to see
you making fun of yourself. That's another angle to develop
if you mean to do that. But the article appears mainly to be
mocking people who make up those trickly little abbrviations
on bb's like AOL. That's your main point. AOL needs to be
disguised but recognizeable under a different name. Ever read Bonfire of the Vanities?
