    School is the mind-killer.

I've found that school has caused my brain to be fried to bits where it should be active and full of ideas and inspiration. I'm stuck with these school projects and homeworks which while few are interesting, take up my personal research time. When I took off some time from programming courses I was doing a lot of personal studying in C# and OpenGL and 3D math and when I started class, I just gave up for the time being and am now stuck doing SML and windows forms stuff when I want to go back to my personal projects. Most of the times when I am home I'm too tired to want to do anything and when I do I'm spending hours on my programming courses. I know I'm not the best at time management, but when I'm studying on stuff I'm really interested in I do it pretty well, and when I'm introduced to something I really am not that interested in it's like I am stuck with it and can't switch back to what I actually like doing until I'm finished doing the school work.

Once you get into programming at work, you will also be semi burnt out by the time you get home, at least your mind will be tired. I was still able to program after work when I was doing that as an internship but usually I just waited until weekends when my mind was fresher.

I have the same issue with school too though, I had a really hard time studying what they tell me to study as far as programming goes because of several reasons, a few of which include teachers who are teaching either archaic or non-standard ways of programming, learning to use libraries that I don't care for, or are C libraries and they don't want us to wrap it to C++, lots of things like that.

Keep at it though (I wish I had... still trying to figure out how to get back in), it is easier to get a job with a degree, just remember that school is just that, school, you need to work on your practical experience too because not everything learn will be used and not everything used will be taught to you.

    Yes.

It's the same when you start working. No time for personal projects. Welcome.

Yeah, I'm in the same situation. I just scored 28% for a report I wrote about motivational theory. Tbh I found the subject so patronising and pointless I coundent take it seriously. Not to mention it is completely irrelevant to anything I'll ever do in real life. After all I am studying IT not psychology. Unfortunately crap like this is going to spoil what would have been a good result for the degree I am studying.

You obviously were not very motivated

"Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

The things you arent interested in now because they arent 'cool' may come in handy soem day on some more advanced project than what you are engaged in at the moment. Just stick with it, adn as someone said, do yoru personal projects ont eh weekends.

What are you talking about? After finishing school, life is a grand and wonderful adventure full of mystery and suspense and fun!

... I give them a year before they miss having the whole summer off... It doesn't even take that long really... just as soon as the idea sinks in that it may be 45 years or so before they ever have that much time off, again. Unless of course they find themselves unemployed and begging for a job again.

    Heh.

Yeah, and just wait to see what happens when you throw children in the mix.

It took a good two years before I could actually feel okay about working 8 hours a day. What's worse than missing your summer break, is momentarily getting it back again. You get a taste of what you used to have, then you go back to work. I took two months off at the beginning of the year and when I had to go back to work, it made me physically sick.

Except for the whole no money thing, unemployment is not that bad. I would get up when the sun started to get warm, and go to bed when I passed out. All told I got a hell of a lot more done when i wasn't burdened with a set work schedule. I am using technology for work now that I developed during my 'blue period'. I think as a society, engineers adn programmers need to break out of the 9-5 40 hours a week mold, it really just isnt efficient. I think I'm going to start doing contract work again, lol.
